Benefits of quitting when pregnant

Quitting smoking or vaping at any point during pregnancy will reduce the health risks to both you and your baby.

Smoking and pregnancy=Benefits of quitting when pregnant

The earlier you quit, the sooner you’ll start to see the benefits for both of you:

  • Your baby will get more nourishment and oxygen, and less carbon monoxide
  • Your baby will grow better
  • Your baby will be less likely to be born too early or with low birth weight
  • You’ll have more energy, improved health and wellbeing, and be able to breathe more easily
  • You will have fewer harmful chemicals in your bloodstream
  • You will be less likely to develop heart disease, stroke, lung cancer, lung disease or other smoking-related diseases

Did you know?

If you quit smoking within the first 16 weeks of pregnancy, your risk of having a small or unwell baby is similar to someone who never smoked.

If you’re pregnant or planning to have a baby, talk to a Quitline counsellor, your GP or a midwife. They can help you explore your options and give support that’s right for you.

“I just found out I am pregnant so I am back here to give up smoking AGAIN!! Last time I gave up for 8 months, so I know I can do it.”
