Addiction

I am older than the seven seas,
I am stronger than the tallest oaks.
I will always endure.
I will never be completely gone,
Look around and you will find me
For I will not leave you alone

Hi Paidi.
I am as old as my gums, but younger than my teeth
But my conviction is stronger than any addiction
Retrain the mind to set it free
Forever vigilant with head held high
We really can say good -bye
How's it going Paidi. I gather you are here to fight the devil again, Good for you! You can do this Paidi, many have and maybe this time around you will have the conviction to follow through. I know you hate that you don't feel strong enough, but you don't need to be strong, we are here to support you. What you need is to take a look around this site and see all the people succeeding in this mission. Learn how to think and set new change in motion, and above all welcome that change.
You have tried before Paidi but that does not mean that you didn't learn anything about yourself or nicotine. Do not repeat those mistakes. I hope you are not still eating pastries and chocolates. Prepare your body for this fight and it will fight back for you. Eat breakfast, drink water, cut back on caffeine when you reduce the nicotine. I have a list of tips if you click on my name and follow it. I was hoping other members would participate in it.
You have never said what method you had used or intend to you this time. 70 hrs was a great start, and if that had been cold turkey, you were almost through the roughest 72 hrs. Adjusting to life as a non-smoker is rough, have you changed up any habits before quitting, just to make it a bit easier?
Change the furniture around today, start smoking in a different place, just you and your cigar with no distractions. Swish the smoke, taste the poison, tell it out loud that you are having a parting of the ways because you want to see your grandchildren marry, and not leave your wife a widow. Do this every time you and cigar meet in private. Think of a life where you are in control and not hiding in the garage talking to a cigar. A life where you can smile and be proud that you love life and want to live it, enough to fight even with your best friend for those you love.
Realize that that was not a friend but that it was an illusion brought on my nicotine . It causes stress, look how stressed you are about your health. Look how stressed you are about now having to quit. Look how stressed you are wanting relieve the stress by taking a drag and then starting the cycle all over yet again. It caused you stress. It stole your money because you got absolutely nothing for all that money except ash. Nothing but filthy ash everywhere, and sticky tar everywhere, and burnt clothing. Stinky clothes, smelly hair, loss of smell and loss of lung function.
Did you know that within minutes, or blood pressure lowers? That quitting smoking is like losing 80 pounds? That is a lot of stress our bodies carry unnecessarily and it impedes the things it is meant to do. Within Days you will breathe so much easier
Say good-bye, take a deep breathe a walk away. Don't look back. Keep taking those deep breaths when you need to calm yourself.
We are your friends, and we can help you. We don't cost you anything. We give support, guidance and confidence. We give belief that you can do this. We know you can. Now you need to BELIEVE that you can.
Think positive Paidi. You really can do this.

Hello Happiness, Thank you so much for that supportive message. I have, indeed, been smoking cigars. I have told myself innumerable times how stupid I am. I resolve to quit TOMORROW but when TOMORROW comes, it is today.
I have been reading posts here for about a week now and gradually getting ready to try another serious quit. Really all I need to do is stop buying these things
Thanks again

Hi there! Good for you spending time getting into the right mindset before you give it a go. Tell yourself how much you hate it. Write down the things you hate. Write down the positives that you know will come. Get yourself feeling confident. Tell yourself over and that are not trying to quit this time, but you will quit. The mindset, I’m finding, is everything.

Hi! Paidi.
I'm on my 11th day of no smoking. I didn't believe I could go one day!
I've bee smoking for just under 50 years!!!!
I got myself patches and got onto this website and I'm well on my way to being a non smoker. Im nit going to be a smoker ever a g a in.
The support from this website is the reason I got through each day one day at a time. I WAS doing it not wishing I could.
My son now is a non smoker because of me quitting.
I haven't given up anything but g aimed so much more.
Confidence, self respect, pride, healthy living and look at the $$$$ saved. I'm not sneaking off planning and scheming where and when to smoke. That in itself has
DE-STRESSED me. I'm not isolating myself anymore. I'm part of the group in life That doesn't SMOKE!
So go for bit. EVERYTHING to gain. Good
luck to you. You won't regret it.

Although Pisces and Trying Tk, they are right about the mindset. You can't just wish you can quit and it's not as simple as just not buying the cigarettes. You have to want to quit. Take some measure today in that direction, change your smoking habits, literally write down a list of why you want to quit smoking so that it is real and accessible when you need it for strength. Wishing something doesn't usually make it come true. Only you can do that.
Put those cigars out in the car so you have to make a trip to get them. Do what i mentioned before. Learn to want to leave them behind and move forward with your life.
Stop feeling sorry for yourself and feel blessed that you have a caring group of people to support you and guide you. Stop fearing this journey . I have seen people with the deck stacked against them come and succeed. Click on my name right here and find the free -e-book to start reading . No excuses. Make it happen.

Okay. I have picked a date. My wedding anniversary is December 23rd. I will quit then

Good for you. You won't regret it. Cut down and learn how to put having one off. That should be easy for you, the master of procrastination.
Joking aside, keep reading and learning. Doing those things that I suggested will help you to see it in a different light. Realizing you are missing nothing, gaining everything and that cravings are really just thoughts will all help you accept this journey.
And why wouldn't you? It really is the best thing you will do for yourself. Think positive. You really can do this!

Good for you!!! Carve that in stone. Make yourself believe that you’ve got this be so determined that nothing can stop you.

Its sometimes uncomfortable receiving advice from others that are younger than ourselves.
But you know what, they are so right,. We have to take these younger peoples advice.
We have to delay the cig, and call it Quits very soon.
Come on, you have been around these traps longer than I and when you have freed yourself, you can stay here and help others rid the addiction or habit.
By the way, I think you have a habit of around 5 cigars a day. Do you think that you have an addiction??? Just asking, my friend.

It does not matter how much you smoke. Even 4 cigarettes a day puts a person way up on the list as more likely for stroke, heart disease etc....
If breathing problems are evident, quitting smoking will relieve the stress and you will notice an amazing difference.
Once quit you will wonder what the fuss was about.
I trust you are reading Allan Carr in preparation for you quit next week. I will be there to remind you. :)
I suggest, and i hope Pisces my friend won't mind, go to her first post and read through them. She described herself as being scared, weak and pathetic. lmao
That little woman has got spunk and guts. The Mama bear of Mama bears when I was attacked.
It is amazing what a little confidence in yourself can do. You are stronger than you think. Nicotine is not as strong as we thought. We have tools, and knowledge and support. Use them.

Thanks to all for your great comments and suggestions. You certainly are helping greatly with my journey to being smoke-free.
Yesterday I joined a gym and this morning went and Exercised for the first time in a long time. I also avoided my first cigar of the day!
I used to jog 3 miles a day, but that was years ago, before I tore up my knee. I know my breathing would not allow that now even if my knees were young. I plan on reducing my smoking over the next few days and I will continue moderate exercise. My goal is 30 mins on the elliptical machine. Today I had to stop for breath after 10 minutes. I also did some light weight lifting, which required working some old muscles, but also exercised my willpower. That should help with nonsmoking.
Thanks again to all

Ease into those exercises and don't over do. Good to know you are getting ready Paidi. You can do this.

Hey Paidi, Your doing some good things for yourself. dont over do it but keep it regular, consistent and good things will happen.

I went to the gym again today and did 15 minutes on the elliptical. Also did weights. I have cut down to 3 cigars daily, so that’s a good start on quitting. Thanks again to everyone for the great support

Good on you Paidi. I do believe you are taking it seriously this time. You have a vision of what you want to be and you can do that. Embrace the concept, this journey and all that will make your life even better in the future.
They say it takes only 21 days to form a habit. Forming good ones to take over the bad is a wonderful way to make this journey easier.
I am so proud of you taking steps to see this journey through.

Happy Anniversary Paidi. How many years have you been married? I hope you make it a special day, and are you saving your news as an anniversary surprise?
Just imagine that this time next year, this journey will be long forgotten and you will have gone on with your life and reaped all the benefits as a non-smoker. Your wife will be so proud of you.
Remember to cut your caffeine intake by half as you reduce the nicotine. Drink plenty of water to flush the toxins, and eat breakfast and wholesome foods. I know that many of us who smoked, skipped breakfast. Chocolate eclairs and pastries are to be rationed out as rewards.....or you will have another problem.
You can do this Paidi. You've been exercising and psyching yourself up for this day. Today is yesterday, and it is now that you are going to start on the journey to be free. Embrace it with everything in you. You deserve better than to bow to the demands of nicotine. You can fight back and we are here to cheer you on. You have seen so many other succeed and now it is your time to persevere.
You can do this. Repeat..... I CAN do this!
Settle down and read Allen Carr and make it a journey easier than you ever thought possible. Just click on my name and find it. Enjoy.

Hi Paidi. How is it going? I hope you read the book. Pisces is so into the journey now that she realizes what nicotine did to us. We have been given the keys to escape. Sometimes we become complacent and too comfortable in what we know. Change can be scary. The time may come where something even scarier could develop. Take the keys and open the book. I promise that there is nothing to lose and everything to gain.
Read it. No one can make you do or not do anything. Just read it. It is not about health scares...it is about understanding what nicotine is, what it did and how we believed what the masses had said for years.
You can do this Paidi. I have faith in you. Do you have faith in me?

Dec 23rd was supposed to be my quit date but I haven’t lit up since last Saturday at4pm. That’s 4 full days smoke free. It hasn’t been very hard so far. The next 2 days should be easy as I am staying at my daughter’s house. The next big temptation will be on Saturday. I ‘ll keep you posted

That is so awesome Paidi. Are you taking an nrt or doing this cold turkey? If the latter , then you are through the worst if not all the nicotine addiction. The psychological part is a matter of believing that you can quit and accepting your new life as a non-smoker. Why wouldn't you embrace this dream that you have wanted for years.
You are doing it Paidi. I can't tell you how proud i am of you. Please read Pisces story of "cold chicken" and the amazing results that we discovered.
I have always said that quitting is as easy or as hard as you make it. Finding the mindset truly makes a huge difference.
Read, learn, accept and believe. You are doing it!

Hi Paidi,
Have you turned the corner?
I hope you can get there, especially if its what you really want.
Take care my friend

Hello Happiness and PuffNoMore, today isDay 9 and I’m still going strong. There’s have been some major temptations, but so far so good. Thanks a lot for all the support

Paidi

I am so glad that you are doing well Paidi.
You are strong enough to face this journey and to succeed. In doing so you have gained not only freedom from nicotine, but gained your self confidence back.
Remember that there is no down side to quitting smoking, only benefits that you are still to reap. Take care my friend. You are doing it!

Congratulations on starting a new decade as a non-smoker. Feels great doesn't it!!!
Stay positive, don't forget to stay in touch and stay free.
