Brain Fog!

Attempt 1, 000, 001 to quit smoking. I feel very positive about this attempt though - although I’ve also felt positive about other attempts in the past. Really don’t want to f** it up this time though so I won’t. My longest quit attempt in the past was 69 days and that was after a spontaneous pneumothorax (lung collapse for the uninitiated) which caused me to be in hospital for a week while hooked to a machine that helped my left lung re-expand all the way back up again. It was pretty traumatic and after the experience I swore I’d never smoke again but time has a way of making us forget and I guess smoking is just that addictive. Anyway ,that was 4 years ago and I’m lucky to be in pretty good health really, but still feel better, look better, breathe better when not smoking and sick and tired of the little aches and pains, skins problems, and general wear and tear that the 20 something smoker gets to avoid but the 20 something smoker heading into 30 doesn’t. These things also magically have a way of clearing up pretty quickly when I don’t smoke so pretty sure it’s cigarettes fault.
Anyway, I remember from my last attempt this disappears at some point (I’m only on day 2 cold turkey) but brain fog always trips me up. I feel unable to see or focus my eyes properly on anything for more than a moment and it becomes difficult to concentrate, watch a movie, read a book, play a video game, or do much of anything really without feeling like I’m only halfway present and the rest of me is not. I know having a smoke will make that feeling go away but then I’ll be back at square one trying to get past this point the next time I try to quit. Does anybody else know what I’m talking about? And does anyone remember when it went away for them? I’m trying to work out if it’s an actual withdrawal symptom from lack of nicotine or if it’s purely psychological.

It is 20% withdrawal from the nicotine addiction, and 80% psychological. It will last as long as you let it.
We can grieve a long time for the loss of a friend or loved one. How long does their absence affect you if it is not someone you liked? It depends on the relationship of course. Some of us (many) had decades of smoking in our past, but once we see what they really are and accept how we came to be addicted, we can change our feelings about cigarettes. Knowing how we were drugged and brainwashed in essence, and how we persuaded ourselves that we liked them. They made us gag, but we learned how to overcome, we must have liked them. Take the time to see the truths of smoking, open your eyes and desire the freedom of being a non-smoker.

Hello! Nicotine is a very powerful stimulant which triggers your central nervous system. Lack of nicotine does exactly the opposite. That is why it is difficult for you to focus. The next couple of days you will start experiencing other symptoms of withdrawal as well. They are different for everyone, but most people experience disturbed sleep cycle, sweating, and palpitations. I am sure you will be fine after the first couple of weeks. I’m also sorry for the pneumothroax. That must have been a terrible experience :/

Hi Ziggy,
I can relate to the brain fog. It can stick around for month's if your using NRT products?
Also, too much alcohol and caffeine can put us into a spin.
I found that I had to have a ciggy before I started anything. If it was difficult I wanted one to think. And of coarse one for a reward after a job well done.
In the early stages of Quitting the smokes they can be missed as a jolting stimulant and we have to get used to getting by without that, both physically and most certainly psychologically.
Its a mind game.
