Australia introduced significant changes to its vaping laws in 2024, aiming to reduce the prevalence of vaping, particularly among young people.
Here are some simple answers to common questions about vaping laws in Australia.
Can I still buy vapes?
Vapes can now only be sold in pharmacies. From 1 October 2024, you'll need to speak to a pharmacist about whether a vape is right for you to help quit smoking.
Can I still buy vapes from overseas?
No. You can't import vaping products into Australia unless they meet strict medical rules.
Can I access vapes without a prescription?
Yes. From 1 October 2024, adults aged 18 or over can buy vapes from pharmacies without a prescription.

Will I be punished for vaping?
The new rules are about reducing harm, not punishing people. But you can still be fined for vaping in smoke-free areas in NSW.
Is vaping illegal?
Vaping is banned anywhere smoking is banned in NSW.
