Vaping and the environment

Vaping products harm the environment as they add to plastic waste and create contamination.

Different components of vaping products cause harm to the environment:

  • Discarded vapes and packaging contribute to plastic pollution. Many products are plastic and can’t be recycled as they may be contaminated with nicotine.
  • Vape liquid can leak from discarded vapes, harming aquatic life and contaminating water.
  • Vapes create electronic waste (e-waste) with their circuit boards and batteries. Not disposing of vapes properly can cause fires due to these electrical components.
  • Vapes in landfill can leak nicotine, lithium, heavy metals, lead and mercury into the environment.

Check with your local council for ways to safely dispose of vapes.
