The demon cigarette

Well, I just read the cold chicken story what a breakthrough, It reminds me of back at 13 days quit I visited my doctor and I was telling him I was letting a patch last 3 days, he encouraged me to use them everyday as there such a minimal dose. So I have gone back to one patch per day, I don't want to jeopardise this quit. I to have read Allan Carr's book Easyway, it's very good and helped me overcome the fear factor. It also smashed some myths about nicotine. I am not experiencing the highs of quitting just yet, Because of pain-another medical matter. Anyway 19 days down and marching on.

I am glad that you read both Allan Carr and the cold chicken story that I posted. Both demontate how the mind works and that once we change our way of thinking and believe that we Can quit smoking, we will.
The small nicotine dose may help to keep you comfortable but the body still misses those Jolts or instant gratification which is why doing things that replace that jolt of dopamine (of happiness) should be replaced in other ways, like treats, chocolate, hugs, and even learning!
Be proud of your accomplishment so far and welcome the change of status to a non-smoker. You've got this!

Well Done Jatchat. Yes it is important to stick to what the experts say including with Nicotine Replacement Therapy. I have read the Allen Carr book too, back when I was a heavy smoker. But I must not have taken it in properly because it was far from easy for me to quit. It is not long since you have quit entirely, so keep going, like I am and many others. We can all encourage each other. It is an addiction smoking and that can be hard to break. March on, but also enjoy things. Your returned or returning sense of smell, your sense of taste, and so on and on.

Good morning Jatchat well done on keep in up the determination you are getting there and you will succeed good to see your reading the history on this site seeing your doctor and reading the book it will help keep you positive and focused

Well shortly after last posting I busted my quit. it's so true NOPE or it will lead you back into smoking full time as it did for me, two days I smoked after 19 days quit, I read a chapter on Easyway and recommitted to beat this and now I am into my second day free. Yippee I am a non smoker

Hi Jatchat
I used hypnotherapy - a single session - to give up smoking. I have just hit 6months without a cigarette and I smoked at least 25/day for nearly 50 years. It has been relatively easy and stress free process. I didn’t want to give up, I had too for medical reasons and it still worked. I was super sceptical about hypnotherapy and didn’t really believe it would work. I went there however wanting it to work and it did, amazingly well

Hi RaggBear,
I too tried hypnotherapy from a book and CD I borrowed from the library, to be fair once I returned the borrowed items the hypnotherapy had worn off, If I recall rightly you had to re-inforce the method daily with exercises. But it worked while I had the book.
I have been smoking for 40+ years, and have been trying to give them up for the last twenty I have had varied success but I am getting more determined the older I get. I think I have tried just about every method there is, It's not the method so much as the attitude and will to defeat this addiction...

Good morning Jatchat keep being positive and focused and you will achieve your goal

Hello 2bfree, thanks for asking, I lasted 5 days on that quit, I've smoked for 9 days and I am now trying to quit again. 4 Hours in, tried yesterday and failed, Been shopping for another inhalator, to go with the patches. Have 'Easyway' on my desk for reference. Have read it twice already, some time ago, The thing I miss about smoking is coffee and smoke with my wife, where we just chat. Have to invent another way and time

Good morning Jatchat
good to see your still very focused on quitting
and you actually will succeed , your almost there you have shown yourself you can get past several days even recently you made it to 19 days which is a very good achievement. with each day you choose not to smoke is money saved and a benefit to your health. the biggest challenge we all face are the triggers through stress and avoiding the temptation when offered. this site has been a big help for me . I have read so many stories of other quitters journeys over the months since i found this site.

There are so many different ideas quitters have used ito get them past that stressful emotional trigger or temptation . some write their reasons to quit down and re read when needed . with myself i just kept telling myself i just can’t afford it and that it will taste terrible and make me feel sick . but i spend alot of time on here ready others journies as it has been the biggest help for me.

i have read your journey a few times and your so very positive and so determined to quit. and you will get there. keep trying new things . i read on quitter on here said every morning to herself when she woke up “Today i choose not to smoke” she said that every morning and it was her way of getting through , for her she was not giving up smoking she just chose not to smoke that day .

you will achieve all your goals you just need to find a way to help you get past those stressful triggers and temptations .

24 hours, one day Hurray, I was a little restless earlier, but have settled down now. just taking it one day at a time, hour by hour, minute by minute. appreciate your support one and all, thanks 2bfree.

WEll I have reached the 1 day quit mark again, Have just taken our Dog Charlie for a walk 40 minutes very slow with my osteoarthritis, Took me 40 minutes to walk 2 75 Km. Waiting on a photographer friend travelling up from Tasmania to callin for Tea, he is on his way to Family in Brisbane. All this will take my mind off smoking, as I try to distance myself from the habit/addiction.

Good morning that's a good idea the change of routine will help keep your mind off smoking

thats good keep being focused and become as determined as you can and you will succeed in your goal

Three Days done and dusted, it's not easy, wife is out the front smoking with a friend. I'd like to join them, but that would blow my precious quit.

Hi.
I used to join and stand inbetween smokers, still do that sometimes. It just means I can get a little sniff and thats enough for me. I think its called passive smoking and I dont smother myself in their smoke. Sometimes its unavoidable?
What I cant stand is the stench on their breath and the smell of an ash-tray. I hate that.
Keep trying. Atleast its not costing you (wasting) money

Dear Jatchat, I’m spending hours and hours on this site every chance,(good distraction and inspiration), just read all your posts, sounds a bit like ME too! Can’t smoke in bed so that’s where I take my IPad! You sound like a true “warrior” and that’s what I’m trying to find in myself again (even after de-toxing from prescription medication (major injuries and long recovery) which took 3 months of cold turkey withdrawals. After that I thought the ciggies would be a “walk in the park” but not so! Any help is great help, keep going…..I’m cheering you on!

Jamdrops, you have certainly been through the mill so to speak, I was advised by my doctor to use patches and the inhalator (cartridges) and so far they have served me well. I would encourage you to keep going, saw my orthopaedic specialist yesterday and he was overjoyed that I was giving up the cigs and encouraged me to keep trying. He said it will make so much difference during the op on my hip. he also encouraged me to lose weight, they don't want much do they?
All the best
Jatchat

Puff No More Hi,
I don't want to tempt fate to often, the smell of the stinking things is n my wife''s breath all the time, even if she smokes outside, The ashtrays are outside to, we don't smoke in the car. It seems you can't smoke anywhere now, pubs restaurants libraries movie theaters etc. Not that that worries me anymore. I encourage you to maintain the rage against smoking we will win in the end, all we need to maintain is the will to win at all costs, make it No 1 priority.
Kind regards
Jatchat

Thanks 2bfree, The only nicotine I get is via the patch 21mg over 24 hours, Will keep trying to refuse to take the bait

Patches have helped you in the past and will help you get through these early stages again, just keep focused on the positives of quitting and your reasons to quit, if your tempted, fight the temptation , ignore it, distract yourself or maybe ring the quit line to get past that moment and you will succeed ,

2bfree,thank you for the wise words of advice, I was really motivated to continue with this quit when I visited my specialist yesterday, the reaction on his face when I said I had started a quit was memorable, he was really excited for me. Yes I will continue with the patches, they serve me well.
Kind regards
Jatchat

your doing very well and good to see your specialist is excited your motivation is very high keep saying no to any temptation remember the temptation only lasts a few minutes you can move past every one with positive thoughts and determination that you will beat this and succeed.

Four days, 44 minutes and 38 seconds. 80 cigarettes not smoked, saving $151.15. Life saved: 6 hours, 40 minutes.

Good morning Jatchat your getting there 4 days will become 5 days today keep being determined as you can to succeed you can do this it will get easier

Yes,
My motto was;
"I Dont Smoke" No matter what!
I used to even tell the dog. Hehe....
After about a year that affirmation was needed less and less..
But just agreeing with your comment to me above. It was my number one priority
Priority #1.

Hi 2bfree & Puff No More,
Well I made the 5 day quit, feels good, I have been at this quitting game now for years, since February 29th I have had quits of 19, 5 and 2 days so today makes 31 days if you don't count the failures. The important thing I have learnt is that total abstinence is only possible with constant attention to your thoughts, be aware of any thoughts that would lead you to smoke, and to be on this site and others, read books on quitting, the wisdom will bolster the thought process and re-affirm your original commitment to not smoke. N.O.P.E.

Good morning Jatchat thats very good news you should be at 7 or 8 days now and you have your thoughts in the right place and i agree it is important to constantly be on this site it helps keep the mind focused and determined

Well to be honest I busted this quit also, 6 days and 2 hours in and the feeling for a cigarette became so strong, I was watching Rugby, which I think woke my animal instincts and they took over and I smoked, been smoking eversince. Having to think about setting another quit date. I can Quit are ringing tomorrow

Good morning Jatchat hopefully you can find away to get past and deal with those temptations when they appear. while you continue with your journey to achieve success with quitting.

Started new quit, 17 hours in, 2bFree, I will be aware now and change my patch when it's due, that was one problem. Probably the main problem. 2 days of smoking, anyway back on track. Allen Carr says that nicotine is the fastest acting addictive drug on the market. So beware (Note to myself) Have had a few temptations last night and this morning but OK now.

Well I've made it three days without a cigarette, on my fourth quit of the year. How do I make a quit stick?

Good old Allen Carr he's answered my question yet again. It is FEAR we are escaping by smoking, fear of that empty restless feeling that comes with withdrawal.

good morning Jatchat you need to overcome that fear and focus on the positives of quitting so you can move past all temptations. just the amount of money saved is just huge , the health benefits are also a bigger reason to quit

They are two motivational reasons for quitting, I was eating into my Savings to finance my addiction, thankfully that has stopped.
Quitline rang this morning, very helpful, talked about the space when temptation rears it's ugly head and what thoughts we fill our head with, other than I want to smoke and the importance of the reward system and with that in mind I will go out to photograph some flowers, just to remind me of how nature flourishes as do we when we refrain from smoking. On my eighth day today of freedom.

Well I have had the operation on my hip, and then when visiting my Dr I suddenly became motivated to quit again, I am now into my seventh day, trust all goes well,
