Day 47 without a cigarette

Posted in Staying quit
schedule 19 Apr 2016

I am now approaching day 48 without a cigarette. I'd like to post here again because other people's posts helped me a lot. I want to give back something. I want to help myself and others at the same time.

Today I told a smoking friend that I'd given up for 47 days. While breathing in cigarette smoke, he smiled and gave me a look like "You won't make it" He also told me it won't last forever.

What did I think? I guess I feel sorry for him that we can't be on this non-smoking journey together at this time. Maybe one day in the future he will want to quit but who knows? This was the first heavy smoker I've shared news with about my quitting. Everyone else I've shared with has either been an non smoker or an ex-smoker and most people are glad for me.

My wife still smokes and I hope that she will quit too one day. I am not angry with her or at any smoker. I am just feeling sad as I am beginning to see more and more that nicotene is a liar!!

Nicotene gives you good feelings for a very short period, it then sets in and gives you stress so that you need more nicotene. When I am tempted to smoke these days I remind myself again and again of the lie that I am going to feel better. No! No! No! If I take the cigarette, I am going to fall into the lie. I am going to slip into nicotene's trap again. Instead, I am going to find something else to stimulate me whether it is some sweet, sour, bitter food, some movement or exercise, maybe talking with someone and maybe writing about my feelings as I am doing right now on this website.

How would he know whether you'll make it or not and if you'll last?? More likely he's talking about himself!! He's probably envious that he can't be like you. You should be laughing at him. I'm on day 58 and a comment like that would make me more determined than ever. Stay strong :)

I think such comments will give us more strength and will make you more determined not to get back to smoking.

Good on you and what a great post. I think the most important thing for us to remind ourselves (and I am day 240 and still need to remind myself) is that smoking will make us feel better. That's a lie as you say and yet, after all these years, it's the first thing we think of when stressed or distressed. Thank you for reminding me that smoking will not make me feel better.

Good luck with your quit - everyone here will be cheering you on.

Day 47 is excellent. Just have a smirk at the doubters. Everyone, including myself didn't believe that I would last long after 40 years of smoking. I'm on day 303 now (still counting in days). Be proud of yourself.
