Be stronger than the ciggie

Posted in Staying quit
schedule 29 Apr 2016

I haven't been here for ages and to my surprise when I logged on I am 364 days smoke free. OMG I haven't wavered, I haven't had 1 since that day I decided that enough is enough. You may be asking "but do you still think about having 1?" Oh yes !!! I used to smoke to ease my stress and anxiety, as a reward system, socially, you know a drink, a coffee, a ciggie.

I still get very stressed (my son has terminal cancer) I still socialise and drink coffee but I have realised that smoking does nothing for stress and certainly does not stop me enjoying a drink or coffee with friends, as a matter of fact I am more social as I no longer spend time, outside,on my own,in all weathers to have a ciggie. I no longer stink of smoke but I do notice how terrible smokers smell, I realised how much "time" smoking took up a huge chunk of my day and let's not get started on "money" I have saved almost $7,000.00 in a year. I know I don't want to go back ,I have put too much effort into getting where I am today. I have just turned 60 and have smoked for many years , it has taught me a lot about me,all the reasons I smoked were excuses, validating a habit because of blah blah blah

It's hard, frustrating but I did it,I am still doing it, I am winning

PS I tried patches for 2 weeks but had bad dreams so stopped them and went cold turkey

Hi Jen. Congrats 12 months is a real milestone. I am 3 years clean but every now and again would love a cig. I do not think we are ever clean but it is easy to refuse. Go to it.

So very sorry to hear about your son's struggles. The time you do not waste smoking is best spent with your son and thinking clearly about how you want to spend time with him. Being smoke free will give you more strength than if you take time out to light up. Definitely no more excuses to light up. Power to you. Wish you well.
