I smoked for 50 years on average a pack a day. Although I "tried " giving up a few times there was never a 100% commitment and failed at the earliest opportunity. My wife arranged for me to attend a private research company appointment who were looking for heavy smokers who had smoked for many years. When I took the spirometer tests ( three times ) I was astonished to find my lung function was top end 93%. I was told that I was an extremely lucky man. This obviously prompted me to quit. I fixed a date 7th Sept 2015 and told all my family and friends I was quitting. I went completely cold turkey and took it one day at a time. I also regularly read quit web pages like this one which really helped.
