46 years a heavy smoker - from 12 yrs old

G'day from the Upper Hunter.
Back in July my Wife got a bit crook and kicked it. I had no intention at that time to give up, but did so to support her. She went CT but I needed lozengers, chewy etc. Kicking a 46 year habit is a bit of a struggle but since then I haven't touched a smoke. Lately though the head fights and spins got the best of my and I was going to sneak a few into me but decided to go the e-cig route using nico free liquid. Not sure how it will go, but the arguments have reduced as have the headspins. Don't like doctors and haven't seen one about this and don't intend to either (yes, I'm a real boofhead) it is my problem.
At 58 and with other medical probs, stress is a major concern, but so far things seem to looking after themselves.
2 of our 3 kids smoke so that's my next target - to see them quit before I go. That's another reason I thought the "device" may help me convince them to give it a shot. Posting this was and is another challenge, sharing my story, my weaknesses and my fears.
Over the years I've had many injuries, but got over them, smoking is a different story. I need to do this firstly for myself but also for my family.
If you read this and are considering quitting, do it, just do it, you will be rewarded in the long term.
I've be shot at, kicked around, injured (sometimes pretty badly), but got over everything so far. Quitting is my biggest challenge and I'll be damned if I'm going to fail this time.
Thanks for reading......
Now go and get your doctor to help you quit this disgusting habit :)

Hi Yowie, jeepers pal looks to me like you one determined guy. Good for you, I'm on day 36 after 50 yrs smoking. Going well and intend to stay non smoking. I have been on Champix, I think they have helped but have had to let the night time ones go, nightmares, hallucinations and one very tired wife.
Keep going Yowie,

Thanks Doin it... Day 36..... Great stuff!!!! After 50 years, you have a pretty entrenched habit of lift the hand to mouth. I rolled my own most of the time and the simple fact of doing a good job on something, sitting back, rolling a smoke and patting myself on the back was my habit to break. Took some doing...
When I cracked several years ago, I now know not to get stressed and to cop things on the chin, like a dust up, you get a smack in the mouth, ok, now move on, don't sit and stew on it, leave it alone. I stewed and called the doc mongrel guts and all sorts of nasty things, then we got caught in traffic, did my block and demanded a smoke off the missus before I throttled some poor person. By the time we got home that was it, I'd smoked almost a dozen smokes in just over an hour.... Geez!!! Now, although the nicotine is playing funny buggers with my mind, I'm deadset against smoking again and my mission is to stop my kids from smoking and to pass from this world a non (reformed) smoker (when the time comes).
Doin it, us old farts need to set and example for all the young people - 40 and below, the kids. We need to do it and do what ever it takes except hurting' people to achieve it. We must lead by example.
So many stories, so little space and time :)
Keep going what you're doing ol' mate, you're a winner!!!

OK you two if I can do it you blokes can, just grit your teeth when the hard yards appear for a little while.
Not bragging just encouraging, I'm 69 and smoked for 53 years, today is the 598th day of my freedom from nico.
Stick with it men.

Hahaha, G'day Bill!!!
Crikey!! I wonder how many BMW's we've collectively bought for the "2 back oh" execs.......
You pair of ol' fella's make me feel like a kid...... Hahahaha.

And Bill, you smoked for 53 years and now 598 days (599 today) clean, brag my friend, pump that chest out and tell the world mate. Brilliant stuff, you're a great example and role model. Well done.

G'day Yowie, I'm a 33 year smoker and am now 114 days smoke free and am feeling great for it, I used the patches and was off them on day 28. So what ever helps you quit do it mate because it's so worth it.
All the best Yowie

G'day A.F.U
