I stopped the day after my Dads funeral the hardest time in my life but I promised him I would one day as I stopped for a couple weeks before he died but he got rushed back in so I gave in and reached for the dreaded cigs so when he died on the 14th September I promised I would stop after the funeral which is what I did.My dad had emphysema and heart problems lung cancer bowel cancer he died of sepsis.

I also noticed my health detoriating over the past 2 years the veins were going thin I was getting out off breath they thought in had copd but when I stopped smoking my breathing improved vastly I only use my asthma inhalers and not the copd one also my veins have started pumping back up again it's taken a year and it's nice to see the blood pumping thru my veins again.

I would say quitting will be the best thing you do if you give in try again don't give up the health benefits are worth it also u don't stink like an ashtray and all the money u save u can treat yourself:)

Congratulations on being over a year quit and thanks so much for your heart felt story. So sorry for your loss but perhaps by sharing, some good will come of it. The realization that we are not immortal may finally get some to act and we can only hope that it is not already too late. Happily, as you say, some of our health can be restored. I was talking to a friend who had also been on puffers and once quitting, the doctor did not know that she had copd , just as my new doctor did not. All my tests came back great. I must be honest and state here that I also ate better, but have more or less always done so but still not finding the motivation for exercise. I take some solace in the fact that quitting smoking is equivalent to losing about 80 lbs, so I am in superior health compared to when I was smoking.

There is life after laying down the smokes and taking on the joys of living a smoke free existence. You do eventually feel normal again mentally, and I will wager, feeling better than you have for some time. Of course looking better, smelling better and having the cash in hand are further bonuses. It can be the life that anyone can achieve by reading, learning and adopting the mindset. Believe you can be a non-smoker. Embrace the concept , and you will do it!

Hi tan51. Respect for your Dad and also for yourself. Your Dad will be watching, I imagine, and you will hopefully keep your promise. Besides, it is the last thing you can do for him and importantly for yourself. There will be forgiveness if you err but hopefully you will abstain and hold your head high.
