So many reasons

I never thought I would become a smoker, but I did. I started 9 years ago and I've tried to quit so many times. I just hope I can stick to it this time. This time I have more reasons, this time I'm doing it for me, not because someone told me to.

I'm quitting because I want to start a family soon, and I don't want to go into parenthood still smoking.

I'm quitting because I'm so sick of waking up every night coughing so hard, unable to breathe, phlegm shooting out of my mouth... Gross!

I'm quitting because it's expensive, and it's a ware of money.

I'm quitting because I've seen my dad struggle with cancer (not smoking related, but still scary).

I'm quitting because the love of my life is scared smoking will kill me, just like it did to his father, and I don't want to hurt him like that. It is just not fair.

And finally, I'm quitting for me. I was 12 when I started. I don't remember a life where I didn't want a cigarette every day. I want to wake up and be free to do anything I want, without having to go outside and have a cigarette before my brain will let me do anything else.

So now is day 01.

Fingers crossed!

Hi Chi. You have the best reasons for quitting Chi.... Love. If that's not motivation what is? I wish i was young again with a chance to make some changes. If had all the money i spent poisoning myself ......

You are obviously bright and all the information you need is right here at your fingertips, so uncross them and put them to work. No luck is necessary here, just a WANT to become a non smoker, and learning how to retrain your mind and behaviour pattern to stay a non-smoker. Some have difficulty or fear of never having a cigarette again. Once you see that is is possible to change your perception of it, and how it can be defeated, you can.

It truly is up to you. Enough chit chat.. you've got work to do!

Congratulations, Chi; you're on your way to achieving something very worthwhile. Continue using this forum too; it does help. I know we're all different and therefore don't use exactly the same path to quitting but here's some advice I was given on the forum that has really clicked in my mind. Think of yourself as a non-smoker; not a smoker who can't have a cigarette, or a even smoker who's trying to quit. Don't dwell on the reasons to quit because as a non-smoker they really just reasons not to start. I'm only into day 17 and people are still asking if I've quit, or in the process of quitting. I don't acknowledge it in those terms; I simply say I don't smoke. Not even don't smoke any more; I don't want to be reminded that I once did. Obviously some people ask a few questions but I just move the conversation on. I don't smoke; end of story.

Chi, its gonna be a rough road..but its worth every step of the way..I am only day 8. Day 3 still so fresh in my mind..was the worst..but I made it and woke up on 4th day still smoke free and feeling much better..the urge to smoke is still there but not as strong and not as often..so good luck one day at a time best motto around.
