Side effects scare me

Hi, today is my first day on Champix and to say I’m scared would be an understatement. I’m 45 and have smoked since the age of 16. I get that it’s better going through the side effect, nausea etc than chemo, but I’m really worried as I have a pretty stressful job and need to on my A game all the time. Any helpful tips would be gratefully appreciated.

I have a bit of a sensitive stomach so I quit taking for that reason only. I took for a month and it literally gave me NO desire to smoke. I recommend eat a decent amount of food then take pill. Don’t take and only have coffee you will feel nauseous shortly after and that’s no fun.

o wow, today is my first day on champix as well! i'm really nervous about this quit, not sure why. has my uptight! i really want it to be my last! hope champix is quick starter!

I stopped taking Champix at day 20. I had some awful side effects, nightmares when I could sleep I was waking at least 4 times a night, I had night sweats and anxiety attacks, yet my husband had been fine taking champix, I think it all comes down to the individual. Good luck

Thank you for your help and all the best for those that have just begun their journey. Today, Day 2, 4 ciggies down than the norm and didn’t even miss them. Wahoo. No side effects, YET! I’m told, just wait till you begin taking them twice daily. I shall take them with food and kindly advised. Keep you posted. Xxx

I've hated the side effects of Champix, but have 100% found it worth it in terms of helping me stay quit (I'm on day 17 now) I've had the nausea, an IBS flare up, vivid (but not bad) dreams, insomnia, and mood swings- but I figure I might have had all of these things anyway just coming off the fags. You'll know if you get side effects and find that they're too much for you, but try sticking with it or asking you Dr for alternatives if it's too much!

Hi all. I have been on Champix for ages. I stopped smoking on June 11 and haven't had one since. I have another 2 months on Champix and then I reckon I will be fine. Most days I don't even think of having a smoke. To combat the nausea make sure you take the tablet 'DURING' you meal, say half way through it. You should find no more nausea. Stay on the Champix as long as you can as stopping them will possibly lead you back to the smokes. I was on Champix for 11 weeks before I stopped totally. My 30 per day was broken down every week until by June 10 I was only smoking 1 a day. I smoked that 1 on Jun 11 and that was it. If you read the Champix Leaflet it will tell you that there are 3 different ways you can give up so pls read them and choose. If you want to know how I decreased each day you can read back on my story or ask me. I have found I have more money to myself after paying the bills so I can now save for a holiday. My dog is now on Hypoallergenic dry food and it is expensive. With the money I have saved I can now buy this and visit the vet each fortnight. Good luck to you all.

Hi Mands, good luck with your journey I used Champix did the full 3 month course and had the option for another 3 months which I took and started but used less than a month then got sick so stopped, could have been a just bad luck but I stopped. I did have quite a few side affects mostly with sleep but in the first 3 months but stuck with it.
I am now 897 days smoke free, early in my journey I was on this site everyday reading and writing what ever was on my mind. This is such a good forum and such a lot of support from like minded people.
Something i read on here very early on here was something like
- remember that whatever is happen in your life having a cigarette will not change anything after you finish that cigarette you still have to deal with whatever it was that sent you running back to the cigarette -
So whenever i got really stressed I would remind myself that having a cigarette would not fix the problem that I would still have to deal with it and all my hard work of not smoking would be undone for nothing.
so take a day at a time and remember there is no such thing as just one, we are addicts and the only way to beat it is to not have that first one
Good luck

I read horror stories of people that had taken champix. I was very nervous of taking them but thought well i wont know if I dont try. I am on day 15 of champix and just stopped having the nausea and I am sleeping better after having about a week of waking 4-5 times an hour but after all that they are working so far. Keep with them not everyone responds the same to them. Good luck!
