Diagnosis

I am currently in hospital in Sydney Australia, came in after viral infection and could not breath and was admitted immediately. I have been here 3 days now. They got me back on track but, it was a really frightening experience.
In the morning a lung capacity test will advise if/what stage of Emphysema I have. Im really scared to be honest with you.
I know firsthand what it feels like not to be able to breath, and its terrifying believe me.
Im 62 years old and had my first cigarette at 7 years old....yes, 7.
I guess I'm in regret mode now, fear mode (and a few other modes at present) BUT I have still gone down and smoked (???).
Regardless of the outcome of the test, as soon as I get out I'm going on the Champix.
You don't realise just how precious your life is till a reality check like this makes you really think.
Which me luck, maybe too little, but its NEVER too late to quit!!
Wish me luck :)

I was In America in March and took sick like yourself. It wasn't until May I felt quite well.I am 60 and lost 2 friends in April to Smoking related illnesses, that was enough to push me into giving up.It been quite easy so far.I wish to be around for my family for a lot longer.Good luck and thinking of you.

No it's not too late to quit this maybe a bit of a wake up call for you with your smoking you maybe realising now how dangerous it is to keep smoking. Although for some people they keep going. Wow 7 that's really young to start smoking.

How are you Silver? Gee I feel for you, and I can imagine the awful addict pushing you to smoke even though you are struggling to breathe - I've had that before with a cold, let alone something that hospitalised me.
I really hope that you are able to beat the addict. I will be thinking of you.

Well its definitely acute COPB (medical).
So....what can I say, except I'm now just 'recovering' from the shock of this morning's diagnosis. it's a risk I took without really considering the consequences for the future.
( 'it won't happen to me?') and the likes.
Now its time for reality.
I'm going to give quit smoking everything I've got. Champex is the first stop now, hopefully it will work for me.
Thank you all for your support.

Good luck silver , I can relate to your story , I had a major scare also , pleurisy , lung drained of fluid , cat scans and now have to see a lung specialist next week , I’m also 62 and have been 40 plus a day since my 20, s and started when I was about 12 years old , I gave up about 4 years ago for about 5 months but the slightest bit of stress and I’d want a smoke so eventually failed , doesn’t help when most of my friends smoke.
The health scare was pretty big this time for me so I’m now on champix , day 35 and stopped smoking well nearly 23 days ago , I know a tobacconist where I can buy single ciggies , so I cut down to about 5 per day and 6 days ago I stopped completely , I tend to crave around midday and just stuff food in my mouth which seems to work , so I’d say champix is working , but with some side effects , vivid dreams and wake 4 to 6 times during the night . Feel a bit weak and quite short of breath , so does anyone else experience being short of breath whilst using champix , because of the plurisy and recent lung issues I had which prompted me to give up , I can’t tell if the shortness of breath is due to recently being sick or champix , I’ve read side effects of champix , shortness in breath is mentioned so I’m hoping I can get some feedback from others using champix

Wishing Silver and Maxi all the best in your recovery. Very scary indeed - hang in there, your taking the right steps. I didn't start smoking till about 16 but my older sister did give me one of hers when I was about 7. I always thought she was so cool and glamorous, I wanted to be just like her :(

Hi maxi, l am currently using champix and l have no shortness of breath. Let your doctor know what's going on. Good luck
