Well, it is the 1st of September and cigarette tax is up again in Sydney by 13% making a pack of 30 costing $35.20 a packet. What a disgraceful greedy Govt. However it is a good deterrent to not go back if you are quit like me. Anyway, i do not think i could afford to smoke at this cost. Would mean spending $175 per week at the rate Steve and i used to smoke. So, yes people think about it and do not go back and feed the Govt. They think only of the revenue not your health. Cheers.

Sorry the weekly cost would be $35.20×7=$246.40.....which is even worse. Good luck all.

just look at the positive side . the more expensive it gets the bigger your motivation to stay quit and not touch a sigarette again

Gooday Steve and hello Berend. Berend ,yes if you look on the positive side it does become a deterrent. However, as Steve mentioned i am sure crime rate will escalate through robberies etc. as it becomes a good business for petty thieves to sell such items in pubs etc. and so on. I do believe that as silly as it may seem however, that it is a person's right to smoke if that is what he/she desires however the Govt just crucifies smokers. Alcoholic beverages have had no way the increases that tobacco has been subject to. Anyway i do wish people wake up and deprive the Govt from these exhorbitant taxes. Cheers.

So pleased i don't smoke anymore, i really dont think i could even afford it....

Even though i only smoked rollies which are cheaper than the ready mades, i still dont think i could afford....

I read the Australian govt is going to increase taxes on cigs by 12.5% each year until 2020.

Yes Dougie52...you are right.Pack now $35.20 and allowing increases of 12.5% each year to 2020 it will by my calculations make a pack of 30's costing a staggering $48.50 . Who can afford this cost each day for God's sake. Stay "quit" people. Cheers.

schedule 5 Sep 2017

So your telling me in australia for 1 pack of 20 cigs it 37.50? Here in the US its 7.75 for a pack. That is crazy to me. Who can afford to smoke at that rate.

Hi Rise and Grind, yes at present people are paying $35.20 for a pack of 30's ........not best quality either. A pouch of 50 grams roll your own works out to around $65. Smokers are hit very hard in Australia. All the more reason to quit. Cheers.

schedule 7 Sep 2017

I stood behind a guy at the checkout on Tuesday, 5 days after the new increase, i dont know the brand he was purchasing, cause they are just that plain colour, but he asked for 2, packets of 30s of whatevers and the woman said that was $75. ?c....ouch, ouch, ouch..
