quit before its to late

I would like to share this story to encourage people to quit before real damage to health occurs.
I am 63 years of age and on the 2nd of April 2016 I was admitted to hospital with sever breathing problems.after 8 days and not much improvement a I was told I had C.O.P.D. (Cronic Obstructive Pulmanary Disease) emphysemia and that this was irreversible
Just over 12 months on I have given up smoking but I can no longer work and I'm trying to live on a pension.
The hardest thing of all was ringing my three children to tell them about it as they were always pleading with me to quit.My quality of life is very poor as a minimal amount of excertion will have me weasing and gasping for breath.
My advise, and I wish I had worked it out years ago is just. don't smoke.

Hi Des,
I am terribly sorry to hear you have C.O.P.D and I can only imagine how hard it would have been to tell your children. You're right, it can't be reversed but I have heard that by quitting, it can slow the progression down. I congratulate you for giving up smoking. I quit smoking and health is my absolute motivator.
Many of us thought we were bullet proof, lived in denial that something would happen to us. It's just a terrible addiction and extremely bad habit.
I heard recently that there is a huge rise in people giving up smoking here and that is wonderful. We are very fortunate with the amount of health promotion, education for a range of Chronic Diseases and the huge effort and campaigns that the Cancer Councils and Quitline put together.
Knowledge is power and I thank you for your very powerful message.

Hi Des, your posting sends a very strong alarm bell to people who smoke and think they are smokes immune . Whether one has smoked for 1 yr or 50 yrs the damage will occur and as you say once it arises there is no remedy. Very sorry to hear of your situation but as Kim has mentioned, by quitting you will improve your well being. God bless and all the very best.
