Turning a new page

I have been smoking for the last 5 years. I started after completing my high school studies and when I joined university I increased my 'dose' due to hanging out with smokers. Alcoholism made it worse and one and half years after completing my studies, I feel its time to quit. All girls I try to date hate smokers and that makes me sad. There is no supportive sites like this here in Kenya. All they do is to create regulations that never work. For instance, I read in the papers today that packets will have very few words and logos of the manufacturer and brand that will be written in dull fonts. This does not help because I did not fear anything the last time they decided to write health warnings on the packets. I always see those warnings such that they seem non-existent despite their large and brightly-colored fonts. I now feel that its time to quit and I hope I will not swallow my words come 15th of June.

Hello and welcome Mwaos. Well done for making the decision to quit. You have given some great reasons to quit and there are many more. Another really good thing is.....you havent been smoking for that long ( as compared to the majority of us) AND you are fairly young, that's a huge bonus.
I am in Australia and they have had warnings and awful images on our packets, plain packaging....lots of different ways to turn smokers off. At the end of the day, it made no difference to me, whether the pack had a gangrene foot on it, or a diseased heart.........or if the packet was blue, red or plain black......I would smoke anyway...and so many others do too. Advertising also made no difference either.
So back to quitting.....If you are determined, find the right way to quit for yourself if you havent already. Keep reading these stories, they are very helpful and keep posting your progress. You can do it.......we are here to help too. Good luck.

Hey, Mwaos, I echo Flora's message. You need to find a quit date, which you've decided on, and get a good positive mental attitude building up to that date too. Make sure you surround yourself with non-smokers for the first few days that you stop and get rid of anything connected to smoking - packets, lighters, matches - throw your packets away or smoke the last one and stop then. Give matches and lighters to a friend if you need to or just bin them. The most important thing is to be proud of making the decision to stop. Laugh in the face of the nicotine monster and think of all that girl you can ask out. Think of the nice places you will now be able to afford to take her. Any time you get the urge to smoke, come back to this site and read the messages and posts. Good luck, you're amongst friends here.

Thank you very much Flora. I now feel encouraged and I will not look back. I will cut the number of sticks until I can take no more.

Thank you WhiteWillow. I will keep reading this stories whenever that craving comes.

yep welcome , and yes they do the packet change thing to make them feel better and the people who don't smoke who vote for them it makes them feel all warm and fuzzy inside.
I stoped smoking the same way I started with no help from fear , or was it all fear :)
either way I do not care what they do addicts stop when addicts stop not when anyone tells them too :)
so well done if you have had enough :)

This is my third day without smoking and I feel great! I had been smoking for 31 years but champix has assisted me in dumping this filthy habit! I will keep this up as I want to be healthier. I am also saving money.

H Mwaos. Good luck on your journey. I gave up last Sept (270) days and it was my first real effort. I smoked for over 50 years but really wish I had the sense to give up at your age. I would be around $250000 better off approximately and of course my health would have benefitted. At one time I smoked 50 a day although that reduced at the end. Good luck

I am very much amazed by you all. It is a community that I will always remember and respect. Today I have smoked only two! Down from over ten sticks. I feel that I will quit even before my quit date. Thank you once again all!
