I cant even run!

Posted in Reasons to quit
schedule 21 Apr 2015

I'm a 32 year old female in a loving and beautiful relationship with my boyfriend of 4 years (who is 37). I have been smoking since I was 15 years old, so more than half of my life. My partner and I recently discussed having children, but for us to do this I need to quit smoking.

I just cant imagine my life without them! I'm relatively healthy in other aspects of my life (gym, diet, etc), but like I said, I cant even run!

I've started on patches, but feeling a bit yuck and its only been two days.

Any hints, tips or advice would be great! :D

Hi Nikstar, happy to hear your putting you & kids as number 1! You may find as soon as you fall pregnant you won't want to anyway. When I fell pregnant I immediately couldn't smoke or drink, it was so disgusting to me so made it really easy, my body shut off completely to alcohol, cigerettes, coffee, tea, sugar, anything that was bad my body rejected which was great for about 3 years while I had my 2 kids but my husband still smoked & I eventually took it up again, he said I was boring not drinking & smoking with him anymore arrggg.....why did I listen...so my suggestion to you is if your partner smokes too, try to give up together, as your both in this together and both need to be a team and be healthy together not just the effect on your body and the baby but afterwards too. You don't want to spend the next 10 yrs like I did arguing with your husband about dirty ashtrays around the kids, it's not fair on them and you both want to be healthy enough to run around and play with them. They are your priority not the damn cigarette. And yes even before you start trying to fall pregnant is the best idea so your body is completely free & healthy to give the best start to a new healthy life! Live life & love it without cigarettes! The kids will love you for it in the future & so will you. Good luck with it.

Goodness, you've done it tough Bronte! Luckily my partner doesn't smoke (only a few cigars after a few (too many) beers). He's being amazingly supportive.. so far. My other problem will be the wine. I do enjoy a smoke with a wine, so for the time being, I'm off the alcohol too... Wish me luck, if you don't hear from me, its because I've gone insane! :) Thanks!

Thank goodness he doesn't smoke, that's a step in the right direction. Yes, I too like a wine and a smoke, nice. But....there's more to life, I've discovered. Better days ahead. I'm sure you'll find even if you just cut down now once you are pregnant you won't want to anyway, most people do..then it's smooth sailing. The only issue will be, never just have one after you think the coast is clear coz it will get you again. They are hideous & trap you every time. Love to hear how you go. We're all a little insane anyway so no matter. A good book to read in amongst all those pregnancy books you'll find is Allan Carr's Easy Way to stop smoking, it's proven very popular. It might just work for you!

Thanks so much for your help! I'll definitely be updating my progress here... even the falls, but I figure, its a wagon, a wheel falls off, you fix that and climb back on :)
