Why I'm stopping

I recently had to return to Canada to care for my mother, who had been diagnosed with small cell lung cancer. There is no "cure" for this cancer, only treatment to make the patient more comfortable. After a very short battle (five months from diagnosis) my mother passed away in August. It was a heart-wrenching experience, and I never want to put my husband through this.
I gradually cut back from about 10 cigarettes a day to 6, then to 4, then 2, and finally none. It only took about a week to wean myself backwards. I did falter during that first week, but discovered that smoking caused shortness of breath and chest pain. I had a fairly bad chest cold about a month ago, and I suspect that the smoking is only aggravating any lingering problems.
I want to become a healthier, more fit person, and this is the first step of many that I need to take.

Hi BerryFine,
I'm sorry to hear about your mother, I nursed my Mum through terminal lung cancer ten years ago and it still haunts me. You are wonderful to be taking such a positive step towards health, stay strong and keep posting.

Hi BerrytFine, I am sorry to hear about your mum. I hear my own mum chest and I do my very best to encourage her to stop, but it is ultimately her choice. I hope she does someday. All I can do is set the example and hope to be followed.
Good for you on deciding to quit, I wish you every success, keep posting.

Hi BerryFine,
I'm so sorry about your mum. I think it's wonderful you have the strength to give up after what you have been through.
I wish you all the best, but I have a feeling you will quit for good as you have showed how strong you are already.
I think this site is really helpful, so again, all the best :)
