Cancer will make you quit

I tried numerous times to quit my 29 year, pack a day habit but it took my husband being diagnosed with stage 4 oral cancer for me to finally be able to quit.  Yes, he was a smoker and yes his smoking is what has caused the cancer.  He is 44 years old.  What a wake up call.  Quitting smoking is hard and I'm not denying that but having watched someone go through treatment for cancer and the numerous tests associated with it, cancer is much harder.

Yes even with this I still crave a cigarette every now and then.  It's a powerful addiction but I know from first hand experience that if I start smoking again I will get some horrible disease.  It's not a matter of I might get sick but it's a matter of I will get sick.  I will never smoke again, of that I'm sure.  My fear of cancer is by far stronger than any craving I have.

I'm 2 months quit.  Used the patches for 3 weeks and then cold turkey.  It was no where near as hard as I thought it would be. I hope by telling our story that this will help others of you on here to stay strong and stay away from this deadly drug.  My life has been turned upside down, all because of a cigarette.

Your conviction to quitting is inspiring to me. I'm very sorry to hear about your husband that's terrible news. Your best asset to quitting is your definitive attitude - your mental strength is jumping off the screen! I'm using patches too - I find them amazing - i couldnt even get through 1 hour cold turkey but with these patches i feel comfortable. I hope you stick with it and become the person you want to be. Best of luck to your husband. xx
