Part 3 Quit

Since stopping smoking, I have been moody, tearful and unmotivated. I see that I used my cigarettes as a reward..ie Right I'll do that bit of ironing and when thats finished I'll have a smoke or I'll wash the dishes and when I'm finished that...smoke. Today I really recognise that that behaviour issue needs to be forgotten about and I need to drive myself forward otherwise my ironing which is sitting in a heap on the kitchen table and 2 baskets on the floor....it really is starting to annoy me how lazy I've become at my chores all because Mr Nico (thinks he's got the better of me) Well today Im really annoyed at myself and this evening when I go home, my house is getting an overhaul. I'll be back tomorrow and will relay how I got on with my hoovering dusting, cleaning and ironing. I do understand I need to be kind to myself but I really dont need to punish myself by sitting static!!!! Anyone relate???

Hi Paula,

I found the opposite happened to me when I smoked - that I always felt lazy and unmotivated and just slack. Smoking also really dulls your physical senses. Quitting smoking can definitely have emotional and physical effects on you, including being moody and tearful as you describe. But just think this will pass, over time. The benefits of quitting far outweigh the suffering involved in the end.

We regarded smoking as a prerequisite to chores and a reward when done when in fact we were just nursing an addiction and trying to justify it. Some of us did it for decades until we finally decided it was time to take control back. When we see what smoking really is, it can be much easier to say no and not miss it.

Everyone quits in different ways, for different reasons and with different experiences. However, I have never heard of anyone wished they smoked!
