Smoking is everything.. it gets me out of bed to start my day.. it is my best friend when im lonely it is my support when something is going wrong or I get some bad news.. it is what I do when I am bored, stressed, alone,on the phone, celebrating, drinking, having a coffee.

I can get my fix from most corner shops petrol stations every supermarket and in walking distance from any craving I get.

Cravings get less but will be there now for the rest of my life this battle will be with me till I die.

Losing the smokes would be like losing my wife or a child

I can quit and become stronger and healthier but it will be the biggest and longest battle of my life

Showing us your numerous excuses and negativity .shows us what kind of person you are. It is such a shame to know how you are not feeling happy about getting healthier..about seeing your money go to the tobacco companies and the government. Not being able to meditate or deep breath.. ...about not being able to find new friends (or making up or inventing a friend) about wanting to stay forever in denial...The hatred you feel for yourself is almost claustrophobic. So dissapointing.

Wow I didn't realise sharing my fear of losing the smokes was going to be so heavily attacked. I'm seeing this may,not be the support network it's meant to,be. Thanks for your opinion im,sure you have harrased many other people too

Welcome gawmowing, unfortuanetly smokes are not our friends, its poisonous and just a drug we have become addicted too, and fed for so long. You can beat it, I am yet too, I'm only 13 days into my quit. You need to look at the smokes for all that they rob from you, your health, your time, your money, and your freedom from being a slave to poison sticks. Good luck, just get stubborn and give it your all

Stop feeling sorry for yourself and expecting a pity party.

Feeding into your ideas is not beneficial to anyone least of all you. Some need to wake up to reality. We know how cigarettes once ruled and how they did absolutely nothing.

On this forum we give support and constructive advice whereas you came to have us believe quitting is hard....and you haven't even really tried. People here are looking to feel better and look forward to being smoke free, and craving free.

I suggest that you read our stories and find the desire and belief needed to quit smoking. A change of attitude is very essential. It seems you only posted to undermine our efforts which was my first reaction , as was softlys. She is so kind and helps support all as do I.

Sorry if your words were misconstrued but that is what we got from it. Wishing you well in all your pursuits.

Hi Gawnmowing. Welcome to this forum. Hope your battle will be won sooner than later. It is big battle and once a smoker "always" a smoker. Just means you don't light up. You can make all the excuses under the sun about not being able to quit. Ever heard a non smoker say they'd love a cigarette for any of the reasons you offered? Yet non smokers experience the same things as smokers. Bottom line is same for those with a drinking problem or any other addiction. One is one too many; a thousand is never enough.

Hope you find something to latch onto to put yourself on the quit trail.

Hi Gawmowing,

I recognise everything you've said as things that I used to feel about smoking. The last time I was a non-smoker was when I was 14 years old...and now I'm 50. I've shared my whole adult life with a packet of smokes.

Thing is - if cigarettes are your friend, they're the type of friend that empties your wallet every time you're not looking and laces your cup of coffee with poison. The sort of friend that smiles at your face and quietly goes about shortening and destroying your life. Personally, I don't want that sort of company any more.

Today was my fifth day of waking up without a cigarette. I am brighter and more alert (in the past, I barely spoke in the mornings until I'd had a coffee and at least four cigarettes). There's no ashtray...the house smells clean and fresh...my mouth doesn't taste like a night club carpet.

You mentioned "this battle being with me for the rest of my life." ONLY if you feel you are being deprived of something enjoyable. There isn't any genuine pleasure in smoking - just a few moments of pain relief from a nicotine craving when you smoke. Heroin addicts look blissful a few seconds after injecting - it's relief, not happiness. Smokers are junkies too - the deep relaxation we get from sucking on a cigarette is just relief from the screaming addiction that was making us tense and increasingly uncomfortable.

The good news is that the biological craving for nicotine is very short lived - and the rest is just down to getting your head right. There is no effort involved in abstaining from something that you don't WANT to do.

Wishing you the best of luck with your future quit - you CAN do this easily and comfortably - I promise!! x

Hi Gawnmowing. I can certainly relate to every point that you listed. I had two successful quits that lasted 1 and 2 years respectively and I reached a point that I didn't even have cravings anymore. Everything you say is true but unfortunately you can't win unless you become non smoker in your mind. I went through "Losing the smokes would be like losing my wife or a child" attitude myself. Not once but twice. In the future, after cravings are long gone, probably sooner or later, you'll take one puff because your brain will tell you that there is no harm from having just one puff or one cig. That first puff will taste awful, your lungs will sear and the smell coming out of you lungs will feel really gross to you. But unfortunately this will lead to another puff and so forth until you are back to point zero.

Smoking is everything except your friend. It's like being in an abusive relationship where no matter what you do you fall behind. Employ NOPE concept - Not One Puff Ever.

Good luck and stay strong.

I may have only smoked for the last 9 years, but I definitely relate and understand how terrifying of an idea it is to quit because I myself haven't yet because it's a huge step and everyone experiences it differently, but I am trying to start quitting myself and I personally am glad that you can acknowledge everything and to me that helps too because we can quit and get through it!!
