I’m only a week into quitting after 24 years a smoker and the best advice I’ve had so far is from a former smoker: what are the benefits of smoking? I couldn’t answer it, there are no benefits. I also think about the suffering of cancer patients when the cravings are at their worst: do I want to suffer short term now for long term health or suffer long term then for long term illness?
One really big factor I’m noticing already is productivity. Most people tend to stand still while they’re smoking, on average for 5 minutes, 14 times per day. Over 1 hour of precious time per day spent jeopardising our health. I’m really looking forward to being able to say I am a non smoker. I’m looking forward to relaxing on a plane and enjoying the experience rather than craving a cigarette the entire flight and being grumpy.
There really are no benefits to smoking.

You are absolutely right! There are NO benefits to smoking. Costly and destructive, stinky things that we got hooked on because of the drug nicotine.
There are so many benefits to be had as a non-smoker. I have never known an ex -smoker or even a smoker be proud because they smoke. As much as we made excuses for doing so, we all wished we could quit. Most, as I , didn't think it was possible. Addiction is a scary word, and yet many who come here beat it. Seeing is believing. Reading stories of others success lends belief to oneself until we finally believe that we can quit smoking too.

Hi LukeC. Good thinking. I think you have convinced yourself to become a non smoker. You too will be incredibly proud of yourself as you last the distance and enjoy the ride. Fellow quitters will offer their thoughts and congratulate you on any milestones you post. No matter how long quit you are, you never forget the early days, weeks and months and relish the years you succeed.Enjoy the positive feedback you receive on this site.

Hi Luke C,
I am on day 7 of no smoking today, which is 150 cigarettes not smoked!! Unbelievable how it adds up. I smoked for 34 years, I am wondering what I was thinking,I am scared at the thought of my poor tar stained lungs, and grateful I am so far, not getting cravings very much.
For me, to not be an addict is very motivating, I'm just sick of needing something that takes away from my vitality as well as so many other things.
I will do it this time.So will you.
