looking for support

schedule 18 May 2020

Hi everyone. I am a former smoker, and replaced cigarettes with electronic cigarettes about 8 years ago. At first, it helped a lot as I stopped coughing, I was smelling better too, and had a better fitness. But this might have been one of the worst mistake I have ever done. NEVER SWITCH TO VAPING! I ended up vaping way more than I was smoking and conditioned myself to vape in any kind of situation (even indoor). My cough has gotten worse over the years so I decided to quit vaping in January. I went cold turkey for about 3 weeks, then made the mistake of taking one puff of cigarette, and went back into vaping. This time, I will attempt to take nicotine lozenges in case the craving is unbearable, but I am afraid of getting addicted to that too in the end. I want to quit for good, but am afraid of going through the craving again, irritability, lack of concentration etc... I experienced in January. I am looking for some support to help me going through all this. Feel free to contact me to share your experience, or if you are looking for a "quitting buddy". Cheers,

Welcome DeeNotehc we are all here with you for support. Nicotine is the addictive part of the cigarette, and the idea is to work out for yourself the relationship you have with nicotine. Set yourself a date to begin to stop the lozenges, the fear should abate when you have worked out your own relationship with nicotine, we are all different in this aspect.

You need to learn, re learn and use your mental capacity (which we all have) in determining the reasons you are quitting, making lists of strategies, which you have been successful in before, distracting yourself in a pursuit which you find pleasurable, our brains are wired to enjoy, pleasure, rewards etc,

Letting go of the lozenges, will be easier once you have done this, above all keep working on your happiness in achieving a certain goal, keep close to the forum and send us your thoughts as you progress.

Hi Softly40, thanks for your kind message, I will definitely try to remind myself and keep the focus on why I am doing this. Hopefully my brain will re-wire soon enough! Thanks again for your support

You are at the right pace. Read up other people’s stories and practice NOPE - not one puff ever. Don’t be afraid because you aren’t giving up something good to begin with. It’s all in your head. Good luck and stay strong.

We had some visitors promoting vaping a while back. As this is a non smoking site most felt it wasn't appropriate while some saw merit in using it as an nrt to quit smoking. I wonder if any would give you their recommendations, as many had quit vaping as well. It is the nicotine and the addiction that we seek to beat for total freedom. Life is good as a non=smoker and once breaking the "psychological aspects of smoking" as well as the nicotine . Think positive, believe you can quit smoking just like most here and accept that smoking never did anything for you. We were drugged and duped and far better off finally breaking free of ALL nicotine. Most people have no difficulty getting off nrt aids. It is the mindset that needs to be tweeked.
