when does the coughing stop?

Okay, I quit cold turkey exactly 80 days ago after smoking for 55 years.
I had just retired and realized that there was no way that I could afford my 3 pack a day habit living on my retirement income.
Doing good except for this cough I developed the day I quit smoking. I never coughed the whole 55 years I smoked but now I cough up this grey mucus several times every day. Is this normal? Is this my lungs trying to get rid of 55 years of tar?
Any knowledge or experience would be appreciated.

Well done! Don't know you but proud for you. Drink warm water in the morning, loosens phlegm. Keep at it.

Well it's now a month since I stopped, not a single craving, longing or desire to touch a ciggie. The flick switch went and love that powerful feeling.
Keep at it folks, it's all worth it.

Well done on your road to success!
I've actually gone the other way. I coughed so much when I smoked, especially in the morning, it was awful but since giving up I stopped coughing almost immediately.
No doubt it is good that you are experiencing this though, knowing all that horrible, icky stuff is now escaping your lungs.
Good luck with your journey

Yeah, along with the cough, I'm short of breath a lot now also. These side effects from quitting smoking are more serious than I had imagined, I figured I would just have cravings and maybe a head ache. Hope this all passes in the near future.
