Yesterday, 10 September 2017, was the first day of not smoking for me, after many years of smoking, loving it, hating it, making excuses for it and thinking that it was my friend. I was not a heavy smoker, but a regular smoker in the evenings and no matter how many you smoke, a habit is a habit.

A very good friend of mine recently quit smoking after a health scare. He was a very heavy smoker for over 30 years and he is now 2 weeks smoke free. If he can do it why can't I?

I'm feeling really positive right now but also absolutely terrified of failing because I know there will be challenges ahead. Wish me luck!

Hi Robn, thank you so much for your encouragement. I had some strong cravings last night to the point where I wanted to cry and I know I was very irritable with my partner (think I owe him an apology!) but I got through it by distracting myself and lots of deep breathing.

So Day 3 today . . . . here we go again!!!

You have made maybe the best decision in your life, and it will save you loads of cash to treat yourself with when you hit those special dates, 3 months 6 and then a year etc. I started icanquit halfway through Jan last year, and it really does get easier. Keep going you can do it!

Hi,

I had the last one 23 days ago. At any cost, do not touch it again and think about the days you had spent without it. Congrats!! you can do it.

Hi debbieuk and Suvendu. It makes me so happy to read your messages of encouragement. Thank you so much. Today is Day 5 for me and last night I did have some strong cravings. Each time, I squeezed my stress ball 50 times slowly and that distracted me. The best thing was that my partner, who is a man of few words, told me that he was very proud of me. That actually made me cry.

I will be back regularly to post updates. Thank you again!

Hi NS. Congratulations to you too. So this is Day 6 for both of us. I hope you do really well. I know how hard it can be but I have to say that last night was actually a little easier. Please keep in touch and let me know how you go.

Today is Day 8 for me and I never thought I would be able to do this. The first 3-4 days were tough but it is getting a little easier and this weekend was ok, with only a handful of cravings. The strategy that I am using, at my partner's suggestion (he quit 10 years ago), is to do everything exactly the same as before, the only difference is that I don't smoke. So each evening after work, I will still sit outside on the deck with a glass of wine and on the weekends, I still enjoy a few coffees in the morning and a few wines in the afternoon, sitting outside where I used to sit and smoke. But now, I make sure I have some cheese and crackers or a handful of nuts to munch on in front of me. I don't care if I put on a few kilos because I know that this is just the transitioning stage and I will do what I have to do to never smoke again.

I think this is the best decision of my life.
