Still coughing up sticky dark phlegm

I'm roughly 5 months quit. And every now and then I still experience sticky mucus on my throat that I have to cough out. It almost always happens after eating. The color gets lighter and lighter as time goes, now it's a bit of light green but it was dark when I had just quit. Anyone here experienced the same?

You are so lucky to have decided to change your ways. A graphic report output changes. Trust you will read these and re read them as you progress. If we haven't experienced your symptoms, I am sure some may be close. Do report back regarding your progress and determination.

Hi there,
I've had no cough at all so all I can say is maybe speak with your doctor? 5 months Quit is great but I wouldn't have thought the symptoms you're describing would last that long.
Take care.

From what Ive read it's because the cilia(tiny hairs inside the lungs)is regrowing? But yeah now I'm worried that I should go see a doctor.

Hi Dembek,
You're definitely right in that so many do get a cough that maybe lasts a month. It's weird though because I didn't experience that at all but I did have a respiratory function test at a hospital about 8 months ago because I'm up for surgery soon and to there surprise, I passed it with flying colours considering I was such a heavy smoker. It might just mean that perhaps you have a bacterial infection and that it keeps coming back and perhaps you might need a course of antibiotics to try clear it. I just think it would be worthwhile checking.
Please post back so I know how you're going?

Hey Dembek, i will not go into colors but I too coughed my head off up to 3 or 4 mths and i smoked for 52 yrs. I think it is normal...the lungs cleaning themselves. What does help i found to clear quicker is to add a little chilli in your main meals. It helped me anyway. If the cough persists then by all means see a doctor who may prescribe a form of elixer. However , rest assured the cough will disappear in time and breathing becomes better. Good luck.7

Thanks guys. Just to add a little more info, I was a pack a day smoker for 15 yes and I'm in my early 30s now. Im feeling better, dont get me wrong its just that the sticky mucus still exists but yeah the lungs probably cleaning itself out.
I can still hear a little bit of wheezing though when lying in bed and when i wake up in the morning. But throughout the day, nothing. :-)

Hi Dembek,
As long as your starting to feel better and not worse then that's a good sign. Maybe your lungs are just taking longer to expel the mucus.
Oh and I love your Not One Puff man lol!!
I never thought to use sayings like that when I first quit but when an occasional crave hits me, I use those kind of saying now and find them so very empowering!!!

Hello Dembek,
I am also five months quit and have exactly the same symptoms as you.
I am 71 years young and have smoked 56 years. It took a long time to create that mess in my lungs. I figure it will take a good amount of time to clean them up. We will just have to power through it. Good luck to you.
