Study finds only 6% who try will succeed ...

This is scary. "Study finds only 6% who try will succeed ... and graduates are more likely to kick the habit" according to a survey in UK. I was intrigued to see how few subscribers to this site remain regulars. It seems the initial intentions are good but something happens and we don't hear from these people ever again. There are many more who believe they would be better off not smoking, fewer trying to do so and then a very small percentage actually going the distance.

Yes Lia, in Canada the same study was done and it was found that if 100 smokers were to quit today, only 5 would still be non smokers 1 year from today. Another interesting fact that was found in the study was that of the 5 that remained as non smokers, 16% did so by going cold turkey, 9% by NRT, 10% by Champix, 10% by eCigarettes, 10% by hypnosis and the remaining 45% by varied numerous ways. It is certainly not great odds for us smokers to quit forever. You are right, I started out with a lot of people on this site quitting at the same time as me and we were great non smoking buddies giving each other encouragement. Little by little they all dropped out. Months later I started to smoke again. I don't really know why.

Thanks for sharing you research and your own journey rick12345. That news makes me even more determined. I would rather be "lonely" on this site than succumb to my 45 year habit, again. Besides, lately I have been encouraged by the occasional return to this site by a few who have years of abstaining. Your message also serves as a very good warning. I am looking forward to the day when I know I will have "saved" #100 000 !!!

I know what you mean and I worry about absent friends. However, I do remember a horrible experience with the Quitline on Day 4, after which I told a friend that if ever I got through this I would volunteer as a quit counsellor. She, wisely, told me that once it was really out of my system, I would not want to check back in. I think, and hope, that is what has happened to the early travelers we met on this site. They have just chosen to continue without wanting to be around this site. That's what I earnestly hope.!

Hi Fullofhope. I would like to think so but I fear the statistics speak volumes. I cannot believe how much I have relied on this site to either vent or share as this is what has been my saviour. I can do some of it alone but I also need the commoraderie of those on this site sharing the same goal. Would be interesting if anyone else comes out of the woodwork to explain their current status just like rick12345.

Hiya...well let's hope Fullofhope is right as this information is quite depressing and would have turned me off from trying in the first place had I known. I've only been a non smoker for 66 days and still really struggling. I think it's best not to know the statistics as it puts a real damper on things and am trying so hard. Oh well, must keep persevering...cheers to you all and best of luck with your quitting!

Out of the wood work, Lia. I am one of the travellers who never got back as it was all too hard. You are so right, people start with such brave intentions. I was too embarrassed to post again that I had yet another quit date and seeing the stories of those who have managed to quit and their journeys sent me undone.

Your posts are awesome, I applaud your energy in coming back to this site after all this time being smoke free.

Thank you. And I will post with another quit date. Got to keep trying.............

You know what, some of us have to be in the 5-6% of those who succeed. Let us hope with all we've got that we are amongst that group and that if we fall short of it we'll have the courage to re-join it.

As Lia also says, this site has done more to help me on this challenging journey than anything or anyone else. Let's keep on going.

Hello everybody! I have been a non smoker for 462 days, and it feels great. I was on this site the day I quit last year. All I'm saying is quit smoking if you want a long healthy life. Help yourself to quit smoking cigarettes. Free yourself from nicotine addiction. It is really a good feeling not smoking.

Best wishes! Quit Now!

Quitting those stinkn demons is all about beating the odds.... Something for some reason or another I like doing....Think it is challenging the body through all types of situations and I hate setting myself a goal and losing.

Hi all, I found this site site to be so inspirational and it helped me through those really tough days in the beginning! I too haven't checked in that's because I've been busy. I'm on day 120 and am feeling a lot better but still have a while to go. Thank you to all that have been there through my journey. I hope I can give back to the members of this site the hope and inspiration I got from the others 💝
