Coughing fits galore...does it end?

I am on day 7 and last night I coughed until I vomited. Does anyone know if this is going to remain? I have smoked for roughly 28 years, a pack a day smoker. I'm doing this cold turkey and have been surprisingly ok until last night. I only feel like a cigarette about twice a day then turn myself off. Is this an infection or is it rejuvenation of the lungs? What relieves the cough?

Well done on 7 days Amy. I remember giving up once years ago and got a horrible cough, constant tickle in my throat with no other symptoms just the cough and stuff at the back of my throat. If you don't have other cold symptoms then it's probably from stopping smoking. Your body will do all sorts of strange things while it's getting rid of toxins, everyone is different & I'm not sure how long the cough will last. I know that Manuka Honey is good for a cough or lemon and honey in hot water is excellent & soothing. Onion and garlic is also good - if you put cut up onion & garlic together in a bowl covered with gladwrap and leave to sit overnight and drink the juice the next day (suppose to be good). I've also been told to simmer a big bunch of lavender flowers & leaves together in a pot of water, leave to cool a bit, strain and sip on during the day! There's so many different remedies out there, hope that helps. good luck.

Good luck AmyR and good tips, Bronte. It's day 1 for me and I'm looking for support. So far though, no responses to my posts. I guess it takes time. 😀 also coughing up a lot. It most due to early start of emphysema I think plus, having just had bronchitis.

Thank you so much for your answers Bronte, the thought of drinking onion and garlic juice is a heady one. I will definitely try the lavender and honey remedies.
Hi Amy. I find that sucking on sliced lemon that is sprinkled with salt takes the tickle out of my throat straight away. Doesn't taste great but it works.

I know garlic and onion juice, yuk, mixed with a bit of honey though, not so bad. Here's a really strange one - cut up onions in your socks at bed time or vicks on your feet at bed time. I actually tried the vicks on my son and it actually did work but haven't done the onion. All these weird and wonderful remedies you hear about - some true, some I'm not so sure? Only testing it out I guess will give us the answers. Try to have fun with it.

Oh by the way feather, that's a good one, will try it but can we add Tequila with the lemon and salt?

Hi Amy I think that coughing up is part of the journey. I used to think it was like someone was go through your lungs with a guerney and cleaning all the rubbish out from years of smoking. Unfortunately the only way your body can get rid of it is via the cough, horrible process but a good sign that the clean up is under way. Might be worth a trip to the doc though if you have had bronchitis. Your cough might need some help. Xx
