Friday Afternoon Nerves

Well after smoking for close on 25 years, it was time to give quitting another go. Have quit more times than I care to remember but feel I am getting closer each time. I have been going well (26 days) with the help of patches but every Friday night when we go out for drinks after work, I seem to drop my guard after a few beers and have a couple of smokes. The next day I wake up feeling like I have eaten an ashtray and asking myself why did I give in? Thankfully I have continued each week smoke free and really dont miss it at all. Exercising daily and actually lost a couple of kg so feeling better on all sides. A cigarette with a beer has always gone hand in hand so now I need to learn to do one without the other. With just under 3 hours to go before working week is done and plans are in the wings for the Friday night outing, I thought I would put down my thoughts in an attempt to try and not fall off the wagon this week and make myself more accountable. As an expat living out of Australia and away from family and friends, the Friday night is important part of networking and relationship building in a foreign land so not something I want to also give up - 1 vice is enough for the moment. Wish me luck and have a good weekend.

Good luck Danno. I'm a fairly big drinker and this was a very scary thing for me cause as you say, they tend to go hand in hand. Not sure if this is a good thing or not, but when I gave up (30 days ago) I made myself have a drink or two most nights. Well, I def drink too much, but because of this, I have not had an issue when drinking. Mind you, I have not really socialilsed with other smokers in the past month, so maybe that is why I've done so well. Either way, good luck. Just think how much it sucks to have to start back at day 1.

Thanks Ally V. I think I am ok with the 1 or 2 drinks and resisting the temptation, its usually after the 3rd or 4th that I let the guard down. Maybe I just have to keep pushing the number out and not let myself have one until I am on beer number 10 :-)

Sounds like a plan. I'm on bundy number 6 which will be my last. I actually think I have substituted smoking for drinking which is not a good thing at all. Means I'm now thinking about having a rum at 10am ha ha. Maybe you just stop drinking at number 9, then you can't have a smoke.

Hahahaha - Will let you know how I go - Enjoy your Bundy! Cant get that in Azerbaijan :-(

Yes, I had to look that one up. My husband works in PNG so understand the expat lifestyle. You're a long way from home though.
