I need to find polite ways to tell work mates that I don't want to go outside for a smoke and that I don't want to join them to keep them company because that builds up temptation and habit.

Personally I had to stay away, sitting around people smoking was incredibly tempting. However, yesterday I bought a pack of herbal cigarettes, called "Honey Rose" from a tobacconist for $8.50. They look exactly like a cigarette and are completely tobacco and nicotine free. You could consider those and no-one would know the difference, although it is extremely dissatisfying smoking them so just a heads up :)

Hi Wolf64,

Well done on deciding to quit, you made a good choice for your health.... pat on the back. This is something every ex smoker has to face eventually, usually if they know you are quitting they will get it. The important thing is you do what works for you. If it means staying away from them for some time. Just explain, that it is too tempting and to bear with you. I found it difficult also.... as I live with folk that smoke.... in a small house. I found you are better to find an alternative, go for a walk, this is all part of letting go smoking and all the scenarios that are changing for you, now that you are an exsmoker. It is an adjustment period and it will settle off the important thing is that you ride it out. Take one step at a time, and face one obstacle at a time. Good luck.

I found my co-workers really supportive.

As far herbal cigarettes - if they don't put you off, nothing will!
