Patches helped me.

I am 70 years of age and had smoked for 55 years up until the 4th May this year. I was not confident I could quit when I stopped at a road-side bin and threw away 2 packets of cigs.  I was not particularly encouraged by the advertising or packaging but I was sick of the stigma and restrictions and I knew it was only going to get worse.

I toughed out the first 2 days and then purchased 21mg patches that I wore for 16hours per day for 33 days.  I then wore 1/2 a patch for 12 days and then a 1/4 patch for 12 days.  Following this system is only about 1/2 the cost of the normal program and it seemed to work for me.

It do not think I could have got through without this help and even though I still miss a cig. from time to time  I am as confident as I can be that I will not lapse.

Well done Warts (plus Solo and Bill44) - I clock up 500 days in two weeks after 55years of smoking - With the amount of tax the govt is missing out on from us we will soon have the National Debt doubled.(with luck they will have to sack a couple of politicians)
