Quitting for my health

Posted in Quit experiences
schedule 22 Jan 2013

I started smoking at 14 years of age. It all started as a peer pressure thing, you know, trying to be in with the cool crowd. Well at the time I didn't think anything of health problems. I had Asthma as a kid but had it under control and didn't even have to use a puffer anymore.  Fast forward 7 years later, I'm now 21 years old and have significant problems with breathing, coughing, sleep apnea, snoring and Asthma attacks. My boyfriend had his head on my chest one night and said that he was really worried because my lungs didn't sound too good, by this time I was smoking on average 20 smoke per day. I started freaking out that I had Emphysema and decided that I would quit. My boyfriend and I went to the doctor and started Champix together. I was also prescriped a steroid puffer to take every morning and every night.

I am no on day four of Champix and the puffer. I have been getting sick whenever I take the tablet but only until I eat. Then I'm fine. But I am very worried as my lungs have not improved one bit, if anything they are getting worse, even though I am on the Steriod puffer. I have cut down to about 10 - 15 smokes a day now. I will be going back to the doctor next week so he can see how I am going. I really hope that my lungs will be a lot better by then. I hope I didn't quit too late.

Also, I have started to get a coldsore on my upper lip, is this a side effect?

I too am On a steroid puffer twice a day and only just been diagnosed with asthma after a severe attack and three days in hospital in August last year! My lungs are taking a while to improve but after doubling my steroid dose with the advise from my doctor I have really started to improve! My husband tells me I am no longer wheezing at night time.

Dr feel good is right about the cold sore, rinse rinse really well after every dose!

Persevere with your non- smoking journey, I am now on day six and am starting to feel great. This is something WE NEED to do for our health, good luck stay strong!!

Thanks for the feedback guys!

I actually use my puffer before I brush my teeth in the morning and at night. Both the doctor and the chemist told me to. :)

Hopefully my lungs start to improve soon because I am sick of being out of breath more often than not! My boyfriend and i have set our quit date for next Thursday (31/01/2013). I can't wait to be healthy again!
