Hi, I quit smoking 3 years ago, but every now and again, in times of stress I buy a packet, and smoke it, and then quit the next day AGAIN!! So over the past 3 years I have probably smoked 20 packets, which is better than 1000, given that I used to be a pack a day smoker. I want to NOT dabble in occassional smoking. My triggers are high stress, being around smokers, and emotional pain. I need to learn other coping mechanisms, and to keep away from smokers. Or if i have to be around a smoker, then bring along some nicoteen lozengers, cos they really help. Im on double patches at the moment, and whenever I transition down to one patch and incur stress, I end up smoking again. today its been 3 days since i had a smoke, hope I can do it this time.

Mishy,

It is hard when you are surrounded by smokers (or live with one), the temptation to have "one" is almost over whelming. I've made it now to 269 days this time and all that initial will power is waning. I guess it has something to do with the fact I quit for ten years before. I disagree with Dr Feelgood about "think of your health" it's a matter of doing something else - working on the car, even washing and polishing it works well for me - you just can't smoke when you're wet or greasy. Then the cheap water ice blocks in the plastic tubes are also a great distraction, certainly a lot more affordable than cigarettes. As the page says ït is your journey", so find out what has worked for you and just keep on doing it, without self recriminations for a little stumble.

Well you have made quite alot of good progress and should feel heaps proud of yourself. There's no reason why you cannot learn other coping skills and as PallMall says- distract yourself and keep busy instead of smoking.

Good luck- You are doin great

If you are around smokers walk away if u can. I am lucky I cannot be around smokers as the smell makes me sick so I have to walk away. No one who comes to my house are allowed to smoke even outside and they all understand. You have to make some rules for yourself and stick to them. If the rules effects people around you then they will just have to understand. Stay strong you can do it.
