Champix side effects

schedule 2 Nov 2012

On the second day of Champix, & can't believe the effect that .5mg of this drug is having on my body. Has anyone taken half a tab & succeeded in quitting, as I don't think the normal dose is for me.

schedule 2 Nov 2012

I also had nausea on Champix, but i stuck with it and convinced myself that the smoking was making me vomit. I went off the tablets because of the nausea at about 4 weeks and can happily say i am 191 days free as of today. I has not been easy, but it's been worth it. Keep at it and good luck!!

Thanks for the feedback Mara & Quiteva. The side effects this morning (only Day 2 of Champix) were very disconcerting.... fuzziness, easily distracted, "out of it" & took several hours to subside. What worries me is - what happens when you stop these "happy" pills? Have been able to cut waaay back on smoking today, so that effect is miraculous.

The first time i was on Chamipx i did the same thing. I was only on it for about 3 weeks and then stopped due to the nausea.

While i have progressed much further on the Champix this time, i still think it's one of the best ways to quit.

Don't worry, i'm an absoult space head at the moment. I foget everything and anything unless i write it down. My work is very understanding though which helps.

I also don't sleep very well and i have very crazy dreams.

I haven't thought about life after Champix really, i just assumed it would be something easy to stop taking after a certain amount if time.

Hi I am on day 114 of no smoking and did it with Champix. You need to let your body adjust to the medication, that's why you start taking 5mg and work up tp 10mg. If you are getting nauseous make sure you eat before you take the morning one and I took the night time one when I went to bed. I found I had really vivid dreams for the first week and was very tired right after taking the tablet feeling very "spacey" for about 20 minutes afterwards. This stopped around week 2. After that I really didn't notice any affects. Make sure you take the whole course and check in with your doctor if you are worried about anything as everyone is different and has different reactions. When I stopped taking them I found that the physical cravings came back for about a week so be prepared if this happens to you. They arent nearly as strong as when you first quit though and are easy to get through. Best of luck and just stay strong and focused on why you're quitting and you will get there.

Thanks for all your feedback. Karen43, you say 5mg & 10mg of Champix - I'm on 1mg twice a day. Yikes, if I was taking 10mg I'd be comatose.

Just hope that I'm not quitting one addiction by starting another - Champix.

Hey robyn im using champix to quit too. I have found that after you go onto the 1mg tabs you really need to look at quittin soon after because when u smoke on em omg u feel so sick. I suppose it affects everyone differently- maybe you could talk to your doctor about half dosing or something if it is too much for you?

Anyways good luck with your quittin!

schedule 3 Dec 2012

Quitter - this is my 4th week on Champix & the only physical side effect I've experienced is slight nausea if I take it without food. You may find that if you stop smoking the nasty side effects will disappear, otherwise get some professional advice. Good luck.

By Robyn47
schedule 3 Dec 2012

Quitter - must add that it took 3 weeks on Champix before the "out of it" feeling in my head diminished to a degree that it's not bugging me. I guess we get used to anything eventually, but am REALLY looking forward to having a clear head again.

schedule 20 Jan 2013

Woohoo, Tues 22Jan will be 10 weeks of no smoking & to ease away from Champix for the last 3 days have cut the dose in half ie 1/2tab AM & PM. Am tolerating this lower dose well, so fingers crossed that the end of this adventure is close. It's an odd drug that effects people in such different ways, & I really hope everyone who's commented on this thread I started in panic way back when, will succeed & finally kick the habit for good.

schedule 12 Mar 2013

Mel, I'd be really interested in your experience after you finish the Champix. There's some reports of long time smokers (over 40yrs for me) having strange allergy symptoms after the Champix course stops. For me a raging rash on face & neck that I've been battling for a month. Don't know whether it's Champix related or the allergies kicking in after 3 months of not smoking. Will start a new thread related to this later.

schedule 10 Apr 2013

Hi Porsche, using medication to quit can sometimes cause side effects. It's important for you to discuss these with your doctor, who can provide helpful advice on how to manage these and stay on track. You can also find more information about Champix in the Methods to Quit section here at iCanQuit.com.au http://www.icanquit.com.au/quit-guide/methods-to-quit/prescribed-medicines/varenicline-(champix)

Good luck with your quit journey, keep us updated with how you go.

schedule 8 Jun 2013

I'm on day 9. I have basically stopped smoking. Two or three times a day I will light one, take one or two puffs and decide I don't want the rest. Hoping to stop doing this in the next day or so. But I feel so sick, nauseous, stomach pains, lower back pains you name it. I really don't know if I can go on like this. I might quit taking them and rely on will power to stop.

schedule 9 Aug 2013

Day 11 -

Reasons for wanting to quit

- High BP

- Almost 58 and starting to feel the results of 40 years of smoking

- Family history of Heart Attack in smokers and one Lung Cancer death

- Was just blessed with my first Grandbaby - What better reason :)

Champix and other drugs

Ok got a scare at the doctors and made the decision that it is time I did something about this High BP and sedentary lifestyle that I filled with all the wrong foods and to top it off Mentally, no ambitions, no dreams - even though this is what I tell everyone else that matter to me, that they must strive to have.... What a Fake I am ! Why dream when I feel so unwell all the time...

My Journey so far with Champix....

Well overall Im feeling good, very very proud of myself so far.... and i dont get many chances to pat myself on the back i can tell you :)

Some tummy pains with Champix.... definitely brain zaps (its a rush feeling in the head - could also be caused by throwing away Effexor - low dose - that I had been on for years.... WTF - so many pills for so many years... be gone.... yep told my doc after the fact and she didn't tell me off like i thought she would lol.... she understood... righto back to the Champix - CANT FRIGGIN SLEEP - so far this is the only thing about this drug I just am not sure I can handle - I wont stop - but I have to do something. I read above one person only having half of the champix at night, and at tea time rather than bed time for another... Anyone else halved that night time one - did it make a difference, either in the sleep or the effectiveness of Champix....Boy those dreams are almost real hey... but so far no nightmares... so all ok there.... I want to wish everyone here success - what a great supportive forum.... good luck everyone, oh and please tell me what you did to help you with sleep.... PLEASE :)

Day 4 smoke free, tummy pain gone ,still a bit spacey. tried champix 4 years ago and was extremly emotional crazy dreams, a bit of a freak really. This time i have 1/2 tab a day , thats it, still dream and feel wired, however a bit of crap to be smoke free is worth it, who said it would be easy? the half dose for me is really effective. i feel awesome!!!

schedule 24 Nov 2013

I quit on the 4th day of starting Champix.

I'm now at 4 weeks without a ciggie.

Although I just got the 2nd script of Champix I'm going to stop taking it because:

* Feeling tired, lethargic and exhausted - which is not usually the case for me. In fact I feel like an old man (I'm a fit 42 year-old).

*A very vague mental state. I cannot concentrate. I have uni assignments due but just can't focus (which is not normally a problem for me).

*Restless beyond belief (despite being exhausted).

*Inability to sleep more than 4 hours a night.

The lack of sleep and tiredness is the hardest.

No nausea to speak of.

Farting like a champion!

I'm also having strange, often violent dreams... which I can live with.

I'm just going to have to be strong and fight through any new cravings naturally. My father died of lung cancer 4 months ago: the image of him on his death bed is a constant reminder that I have to quit for good.

I'm hoping that the effects of Champix wear off quickly.

By Ajay
schedule 26 Nov 2013

I found that if I take Champix/Chantix with food, that feeling of nausea only lasts a couple minutes. The only other effect that I've noticed is my sleep pattern. I usually sleep deeply but since I've been on Champix, I rarely have a night where I don't toss & turn or wake up in the middle of the night and when I'm tossing and turning, I'm half conscious and half asleep.

schedule 10 Dec 2013

Started getting nausea day 4 but it goes away after a while. Also feel sick if I have a smoke now.

Don't crave cigs (nicotine) so if I smoke its more habit..like after morning coffee…or under stress. Incredibly tired….feel like I could sleep all day. Sleeping solidly and now on day 10 but have had to cut the dose in half…just feeling too spaced out, zonked out, really foggy and unmotivated. Nightmares have gone for now. I take one full 1.0mg at noon after eating and it seems to get me right through till the next day. Thats it. Can't believe how much my car stinks and how people smell after smoking…my sense of smell and taste are on high. Sometimes just walk around wanting something but can't figure out what it is….not cigs, not alcohol, not chocolate….last night I craved red cabbage for dinner…never before. Right now I feel like sardines! Am putting on weight, but have started walking mornings if I wake up in time!…..this really helps my frame of mind for the day. Can't believe I will stop, so far have cut in half and not wanting one till late morning. Wondering who will emerge from this…..just don't feel myself at all. 2 days to go to quit….determined…and keep up the posts…it really helps. Good luck everyone…lets beat this monster!

Wow, this thread I started 13mths ago certainly developed some legs. Champix...love it (it works) or hate it (side effects)can be handled if you adjust the dose to suit you. Towards the end of my course I was down to 1/4 tab twice a day. A word of caution - if you're a smoker of decades, as I was, you may have some weird allergy reactions as your body adapts to nicotine free life. It takes time but wonderful to breathe easily. Good luck.

nearly finished third week on champix.. and quit smoking on 8th day.. currently taking 1mg twice a day..symptoms experienced so far were foggy mind (eg forget what I was saying the next min), dry mouth, nausea (generally mild if ate food with tablet), flactulence, tired all time no matter how long I've been in bed for and wierd dreams that seem like I'm partly awake..is that why I feel so tired?? decided to post experience today as have had severe nausea for last two days.. tip to all those that drink soda water and feel nauseous-dont! realised after researching tips to manage nausea that it actually exacerbates it.. anyway can't deal with nausea at moment.. am thinking of reducing to 0.5 twice a day.. although am confused as doctor initially said that should be fine but then pharmacist said no.. want to remain smoke free but am struggling really bad with nausea.. would love to know if anyone has successfully remained smoke free for quite a while even though they had reduce dosage??

1st day of Champix a little scared as I am a small eater and don't sleep well. This is my second attempt, only did 10 days the last time as I thought I was going mad. Was very disappointed in the doctor I saw (it is her 1st case so am feeling a bit unhappy as I mentioned something for the nausea she just brushed me off). If champix sends me crazy I will go to patches I am going to quit smoking!!!!! but am not going to go around the twist doing it:))))

If you take Champix with your breakfast add a few Rasberries to your cereal that is very good for nasea or buy rasberry tea. The other thing I use is Ginger tablets 3 times a day from the health food shop they are very mild also work for travel sickness or morning sickness and that is vertually what we are going to suffer from using champix helps a lot green apples also help. I have not been sick on it yet using these helps so far... Cross fingers....

I have been a heavy smoker for 49 years

I got myself so prepare I went and bought Ginger Tea, for through the day also ginger capsuales 3 times a day and chanomile tea to have before I go to bed at night helps relax and also good for nausea and eat green apples and lots rasberries, I only had a few headaches and a puff of wind but so far all works, don't forget it may cost $ but you save in the long run, give it a go.

Don't forget only take you pills WITH MEALS and Drink lots of water you are re-trainning yourself for a better life .

I also have taken up push bike riding on the paths and that is what made me do this, I ride 25 K every 2 days thought if I can do this with smoking I can do better and challenge myself to higher hills also be a healthier person anddd join other people instead of sitting on the side line watching with a smoke

I have so many plans now and I pray this will be it

Good Luck every one

Hey Evirod...you got yourself well prepared hope you are managing ok, cycling is great, I do it too! On day 3 of champix...anxious about the double dose tomorrow. Today I have had two rollies, took me two attempts to smoke the first one and didn't enjoy the second! Have run out of backie and don't want to buy anymore so hopefully my double dose tom will push me over to being a non smoker or ex smoker as they say. I have taken up my love of art again and its keeping me busy, nice not to have to brave the wind and rain and cold to go outside to smoke...advantages in everything. My habit is saying its time to smoke but my body and brain is saying no.....Has anyone else just started champix?? How are you doing, would be nice to have a buddy to support :)

schedule 23 Feb 2014

schedule 25 Feb 2014

Hi...Chrissy? is that your name? thanks for your reply. You have a few days to go then before you start the wonder drug. I have taken it before and had bad side effects but this time round I am not too bad. A little nausea, no headaches or abdo pain so relatively quite ok. I am on day 7 of champix and have had 3 days with no cigs...still could fancy one so just shoved my nose in the ashtray outside...gross!! Tomorrow is the double dose 1mg both morning and night so we shall see. You have a lot going on at the mo Chrissy6110 so good luck and you can do it. I can now actually breathe in without coughing...progress!!Ttfn x

schedule 28 Feb 2014

Hi Chrissy6110...are you ok, this is your day to start Champix isn't it? I have not had a cigarette since 20th Feb so 8 days free...and boy do I feel better. I have had one or two feelings of I want one but I allow the thought then do something that interests me and I am ok. I am due to have an op on my spine in the next 18wks so was warned that if I didn't stop smoking they may refuse to do it...that has helped also as I want fixing :)....let me know how you go, bye for now

schedule 14 Mar 2014

Well this is day 15. I had one puff at work with my coffee and then threw the cigarette away :) I had one cigarette yesterday and defiantly feel that I am going to succeed in quitting this time.

I have been smoking since I was 15 - 10 years is enough! As a child, it is funny, I was also so 'anti-smoking'.

The Champix has made quitting so much easier. I have suffered from the nausea but as others have mentioned, this is minimal if I just take it with a little food. I don't normally dream - but I have had a couple this week - one was a little violent but I can deal with this.

GOOD LUCK EVERYONE!

I am on day 4, still smoking, I cut out 1 ciggi today... Thinking of the one before bed. I am having nightmares and crazy dreams, headaches and feeling very fuzzy, I'm making mistakes at work and can't risk my job as this is my tenth week there... I am very up and down with emotions. Angry, irritable depressed at times, I have cried twice this evening from this.... I am not sure what to do I want to quit, but can not afford to be feeling fuzzy like this at work then making mistakes and my partner be on the receiving end of my anger and other emotions...

schedule 23 Mar 2014

Hi, I'm on day 12 of the tablets and stopped a couple of days ago. I've had a couple of small cravings but other than that I've been okay. I have a much bigger concern in that I have lost all sense of taste and smell - has anyone else experienced this ? I mean I cannot taste a thing, mints, chewing gum, sweets all the same. Went for a Chinese last night and had some real spicy chicken which I could feel tingling my lips but I couldn't taste a thing. Also, left the grill on this morning and couldn't smell the thing burning so not good at all. Would be interested to hear if this is the same for everyone ?

Currently on day 16 of Champix, and haven't had a cigarette for about four days now. Never thought I'd ever quit, but so far so good.

The nausea is horrible, but that's been my only side effect thus far. I guess I should count myself lucky.

I hope everyone is still going strong. This habit isn't easy to kick.

Hi,

I've quite for about 8 months after taking Champix. Unfortunately I got back into the habbit. I am going to try again as I have purchased another starter pack but am a bit sceptical. I have had severe side-effects from using Champix including Sleep Apnea, raw Sinus passages, for some reason I would sneeze continuously and eventually my nasal passages were so raw that they would even bleed. I have never experienced this previously.

Hi all you quitters, well done. I quit 2 years ago on Zyban with few side effects except weight gain - which happens when your metabolism goes back to normal.

I am on day 15 of stopped smoking on Champix and have found the sleep disruption the most difficult to deal with. I am tired and 'flat'all the time and feel apathetic. On Zyban I felt really positive and motivated and only lapsed after 8 months due to not fighting the 'missing an old friend feeling. I am determined to persevere this time as have committed mysrlf to saving the money for a holiday abroad. I will ask about reducing the 2nd dose to try to sleep better and therefore feel more cheerful! Has anyone been still successful in quitting and done this?

schedule 27 Aug 2014

I"m only taking 0.5 mg of Champix, as the 1 mg is far too strong for me. I'm on my 3rd week and it's ok. A few craving, weird dreams, but I can handle that. I've tried Champix several times and this has been the best experience for me so far. ( How can the same dosage be for everyone..?? How can a large adult male weighing 200 pounds have the same dosage as me, a 140 pound female..? ) This is what prompted me to cut the dosage in half ..

schedule 16 Sep 2014

Am on first day of the full dose. The morning sickness (!) is terrible. Am still smoking, am hoping on the weekend to give up, although I have felt no difference by taking the Champix yet. How long did it take most people before they lost the cravings or didn't enjoy smoking?

IMPORTANT: The golden unwritten rule of champix

1.NEVER TAKE YOUR SECOND PILL AFTER 6pm or you won't be able to sleep.

2. Always have something to eat when you take the pill to avoid nausea.

3. Try take your first pill as early as possible in the morning, always with food

Do this and you'll get through it. I've done it. It works.

Hey Everyone,

After reading some comments about side effect of Champix. I thought i should share my experience also. In November last year I got motivated to quit smoking and consulted the Dr, got prescription of Champix. I bought but did not used. I totally forgot about about Champix but at the end of january 2016, I tried without any motivation. I took one tablet.

I was facing side effects like constipation, gas, dry mouth, unusual dreams and headache but i did not stopped taking tablet.

On 4th day i smoked a cig and just after that got headache ...smoked couple of more and headache was unbearable... i took painkiller twice, That was the day when i started to hate smoking from inside... During 1st week i bought 3 pack of cig ...Not because i felt like smoking...I think it was because of my habit...I use to smoke half cig and throw it away. I did not smoked at all from my day 8th and tomorrow It will be the last day of my 2nd week. I am taking Champix half an hour before sleeping and after breakfast. So far did not have had sleeping problem. I suggest take it with glass of water and after eating enough. During second week only two side effects i am facing.. Unusual dreams every night... i urinate almost double then i use to. Between i do little bit exercise and trying to eat a lot ..Not afraid of weight gain because i am skinny.

Hi All

Hi Everyone

I was prescribed Champix in 2011, but because I was going to Hawaii for a couple of weeks, I didn't start the course. I wanted to have my beloved smokes with me on holiday, as you do. By the time I felt like I should think about quitting again, it was another 2 years later, the untouched Champix had expired, so it went in the rubbish.

In November 2015, I was diagnosed with stage 1 hypertension. I'm a 47 female and weigh 54kgs, been smoking since I was 15 or 16, born to parents who smoked, so I guess I've been passive smoking / physically smoking for my whole life (apart from when I was pregnant). I was offered a new course of Champix 4 weeks ago. I have now been smoke free for 1 week. I was smoking approximately 10 a day, more if I was drinking / socialising / bored etc. It has not been easy because I have had very bad nausea, stomach pain and vivid dreams (not nightmares). I tested my blood pressure today and it has gone down to the pre-hypertension stage which is a big deal to me.

So yeah, the side effects are not pleasant. It did not matter to me if I took them with food or not, within 5 to 10 minutes, waves of morning sickness like nausea were washing over me for about half an hour. If I ate a banana before taking a pill, even worse (I hate those yellow Devils, the smell of them make me dry heave, was only eating bananas due to high blood pressure as they are full of potassium, will not eat again). I am going to take the advice of some dude on this page, take the night pill before 6pm because I am having restless nights.

To all the people that are having side effects, please, keep trying to push through. I have found that cravings come, but they pass quickly. The last time I quit smoking was about 4 years ago, I did it cold turkey and lasted 10 months. During that time I had put on 8kgs and was desperately unhappy. I had been slim for my entire life and I think that smoking and metabolism, in my case, are linked. I have an had an under active thyroid since 2013 and am on life long medication unfortunately. Ok, so anyway, I hired a dreadmill and lost the 8kgs in about four months. I was thrilled to have my figure back and in a moment of pure idiocy, promptly rewarded myself with a cigarette. And so I started again.

I am determined to quit permanently this time. I have an eating plan this time so that I don't put on an excessive amount of extra weight.

Accidentally hit "post".

Good luck fellow everyone in your quest to become smoke free. There are way more heavier smokers than I on this page that have succeeded, congratulations!!

Love and Peace xSx

The problem with Champix and many other NRTs fall into this category as well is you never know how you will react as it is different for everyone who uses them. One can sail through no problem and others have very bad reactions. It would be nice to know up front but it is a case of you have to try and it and see how you handle it.

I did try Zyban, http://rxcoupons.org/coupons/zyban-coupons-discounts when it first came out. It was the miracle pill that would make it so you would never smoke again. I did take it for two weeks and did not react well to it. However before I stopped I talked to my doctor as it is recommended you just don't stop but may need to gradually come off of it.

So which one is better I am not sure anyone can tell you beyond just their own experience with the two. Talk with your doctor and ask questions about if it is right for you or not. Go over your meds you take now as these do not play well with some other meds. Look at your medical history as again some conditions can be made worse if you are taking them. Read online about the two drugs before you decide to take them. What are the side effects and how do they work.

schedule 11 Dec 2016

I am on pack 1 end off week 3. 16 days smoke free, still get cravings. Vivid dreams, bad temper, exploded at work a week ago, huge blue last night with my 17 year old son. Do not know what is worse. BTW smoked for 40 years, mostly rollies. Feeling depressed.

schedule 8 May 2017

I started taking Champix 5/04/17 but it took me until 25/04/17 to quit. I have been smokefree since then (except one i had yesterday). I took myself off the Champix medication 1/05/17 due to some horrifying nightmares, bouts of depression, anxiety and panic attacks.

It has affected my work life, I have a complaint against me last week because of my erratic thinking affecting my job.

I'm still not sure if the side effects have worn off and I am lucky I have an amazing manager but my confidence in both my personal and professional lives have suffered and I am constantly second-guessing any and all decisions/thoughts I have.

I have been getting counseling and it helps but honestly if I had known this was going to be a side effect, I'd probably still be smoking.

The cravings are sometimes overwhelming and I slipped and had one yesterday. I know it would be easy to just pick it up again but for now I am coping ok with the withdrawal symptoms etc.

schedule 10 May 2017

Day 4 of Champix

No nausea which I am happy about but feeling very depressed, flat and irritable. Anxiety comes and goes but just have a horrible feeling in the pit of my stomach. I have had depression most of my adult life which worsens at times so I can deal with this but feeling much more sad than usual, feeling like I just want to lay in bed and be alone and do nothing.

Anytime someone at work asks me a question I just feel annoyed, especially if it’s a dumb question it makes me very angry very quickly. Feeling snappy towards everyone too. Cigarettes starting to taste a bit yuck now and noticing the smell more, particularly in my car. I had 1 bad dream last night which left me waking up quite upset. Starting the second tablet at night today so will see how that goes
