Hi everyone,

I am on day two of Champix.  Is it natural to smoke in the first few days?  I have been, however i have noticed that yesterday (1st day) and today, I have dramatically reduced the amount that I have been smoking, by more than half. I have set my quit date for the Oct long weekend, which is 14 days in.

P.S.. I have also noticed that taking a couple of panadol tablets a few hours after the champix has helped with any side effects of (not smoking as much) and any from taking the medication. Doc told me it was ok to take panadol.. only at the normal safe dosage of course.

Hi Nimax ! Good on you and keep going! I am thrilled that Champix is around as I had tried everything! I am now 140 days smoke free and owe it to Champix. Lots of people put it down and say that it gives them lots of side effects. Yes, it probably does, but take them with food helps heaps. And you can smoke while you're on it but if you take them properly, you won't want to smoke by the 10th or 11th day! I know heaps of people that have stopped with Champix.... what is the consequence ? Cancer ? Good luck and keep going, it gets easier ! M

schedule 17 Sep 2012

Hi Nimax, I also used champix to quit. This is my first real attempt to quit, and I'm at 31 days now. The champix program is three months but I only used about three weeks of tablets. I stopped smoking on day 14 of the course and I think that it took me till then due to a mental thing of wanting to hang onto something that had comforted me previously. I began just not thinking about smoking and there was more and more time between cigs, and when I had one it just tasted like crap. I ended up forgetting to take the tablets and so I decided I was going to do it on my own and I feel fantastic!!!!! Good luck! I still have the odd craving when something reminds me of smoking (like tv, or friends) but they pass very quickly (ESP. When I busy myself with something else).

Thanks for your support guys. Im on day 3 now and although I have smoked 3 so far today, which is a dramatic drop from yesterday and therefore a huge drop from pre- quit campaign, I am feeling much more confident that I will be able to stop all together by day 11 to 14. I felt bad yesterday but feel so much better today.

schedule 19 Sep 2012

Eric is right, champix is only an aid to assist in the early stages of quitting while withdrawing. You have to exercise willpower, have a plan and dedication to achieve your goal. Ibd1858, it's a shame that you have wasted a champix opportunity to quit (I read on here that you can only use champix once in twelve months unless you privately pay for another prescription) but maybe champix wasn't for you. I'm surprised that your doctor renewed your prescriptions if you hadn't given up by end of first prescription. Good luck finding something to help you.

My mate and I had smoked for 40 years and we wanted to quit He quit with Champix so I am not knocking it. I did it cold turkey with help from (a) Allen Carr's book Easy Way to Stop Smoking (b) this website and (c) Joel Spitzer's website WhyQuit.com.

schedule 12 Dec 2012

Hi! Well, I'm day 30 now - 'smoke-free'!!! :-)

Yes, ok - it's still not Easy - willpower is needed, and I do getting cravings occasionally - they just seem to 'well up' on me, so annoying. But, I'm driving, using the phone, having a cuppa or glass of wine, etc, all without a ciggie. Been with friends who smoke & it hasn't bothered me, I probably want one more when I'm at home alone?! Also have been out to the pub,and for a meal, and have felt so relieved that I don't have to join my friends out in the cold, brrr! Fantastic.

Unfortunately, even though I eat & leave a bit of a gap, I still occasionaly feel a bit nauseous after taking the morning tablet, but not too bad. Still get the odd headache, and I try not to take the evening tablet too late coz it can take ages to get to sleep. In fact, sometimes I forget to have it straight after my meal, so then I just don't take it, which has happened a few times - we do eat a bit late to be fair. Actually, trying something different tonight, I had a snack earlier, and decided to take the 2nd one then (there has to be an 8hr gap apparently), so am hoping that'll be okay.

The worst thing is the Increase in Weight - aargh!!! :-( Totally my fault, coz I keep substituting 'stuff' ie. crisps, chocs - Not fruit unfortunately, and, can't seem to motivate myself to do much exercise! Stupid really, but I need to concentrate on Not smoking more at the moment. I've never 'snacked' that much before, and I'm now worried what the heck I'm going to be wearing over the festive season . . . . . . !?!

Oh dear - well, January will see me exercising for all I'm worth, can't bear this tight feeling round my stomach! :-(

Anyway, Good Luck to the rest of you!

Champix is Not a 'wonder drug', but it has really helped me this time.

I really wanted to quit and I think that and my 2 kids were my motivation. I have been a closet smoker for most of my life. There are certain people (smokers) i will smoke in front of and then others who would not think for a second I am a smoker. Suddenly, I realized my lifestyle did not include smoking. I am a teacher, mom, wife and love to stay healthy. I finally chose Champix and am now on day 16 of the pills and day 5 of quitting. Yes, I have some side effects, but I know that they are much better that the side effects I will have from smoking as I get older. I still feel the urge to have a cigarette. Not really the cigarette itself, but the peace it brings me when I hide away for 20 mins. I struggle on what to do instead of running out for a coffee to hide a cigarette. I will try my best not to give in. I am going to keep going and hope that 6 months from now I will no longer have any thoughts of missing that cigarette time.

schedule 1 May 2013

I'm on day 24 of Champix and day 15 of NO SMOKING. I stopped on day 9. I have cravings everyday but it is getting easier. Sleeping was terrible last week, was averaging about 3 hours a night but the last two nights have been back to normal (except for the dreams which I am now used to!) I absolutely LOVE not smoking and am going to use all my strength and willpower never to smoke again... I would never even have got this far if it wasnt for Champix...

About 2 years ago, I quit with the aid of Champix, and eventually an "e-cigarette". I've always been a sceptic to this things, thinking the awareness of the aids would ruin the effects - wich I mostly thought were poor placebos. I was very wrong. I used to smoke about 40 full-strength a day, and noticed that I was down to almost half, only a week into the initial 2-week period. By the end of day 10 (chose day 10 for full stop) I was down to 9-10 cigs - most of them by social associaton and habit. I was on for 12 weeks. After that, I did notice an increase in psychological craving. A friend got me the mentioned e-cigarette with nicotine-free refills - wich at first sight I thought was just stupid. But a few puffs on it at the worst moments, helped surisingly much! The look, something in hand and mouth, the little throath bite, and vapour coming out - I have a totally new respect for the placebo effect now.

Unfortunately, 7-8 months later I got in over my head with a new job and social events, and I broke under too much stress over a longer period. I did, however, learn a few things about the quitting aids, and myself:

1. I felt much better whithout the cigarettes - and intend to quit again when this job is over (already handed my resignation).

2. I will gain weight when quitting. My metabolism drops, and this is normal. Just need to lower my snacking and work out a bit more.

3. I cannot allow myself cigarettes when parting/drinking. Some seem to be able to stick to "just that", I know now that I am not one of those people.

4. Quitting smoking, with Champix or without - has side effects. Most of the negative side effects are indistinguishable from when quitting without Champix - I've seen the same when I tried cold turkey a few years earlier. Thus remember, Champix is only an aid - not a miracle cure. Expect moodswings, irritability and possibly depression - that way you're much more prepared to tackle them head on if it happens.

5. Keep an E-cigarette with nicotine free refills charged and ready - one in your pocket, one i the car. A few puffs will soothe the mind when the winds blow hard.

Well, sometime in the next week, I'll be off the fags, I've nominated Wednesday after starting Champix last Saturday. Had a seriously... um... 'vivid' dream last night. Today's my first day on the two larger dose tablets and I've had five smokes, four with a couple of beers at lunchtime, cravings have been much reduced already so it may be earlier than Wednesday that I give them away.

I had a minor heart scare three years ago, and a different minor episode a month back. Not really keen to spend any more time in hospital connected up to machines that go ping, so that's why I'm getting off the darts.

I've decided to be proactive in other ways too, so I'm joining a gym, I figure this will remind me why I'm getting off the smokes - it might also make the visit to the cardiologist in October a little easier to take if I'm going in three months smoke free and a bit fitter!

I have smoked 10 a day (a lot more when drinking) for 14 years and decided to try Champix to finally quit. My motivation is starting a family next year. I am now in my 3rd week of taking Champix. I quit completely 5 days ago after a week or so with reduced smoking and electronic cigarette replacement. I have had no nicotine cravings and only a few cravings out of habit (after a nice meal and when out drinking).I have made it through two nights out drinking with no cigarettes which felt great. I feel champix is definitely working for me so far! The only issue is some nausea after the morning pill but it is lessening each day and crazy vivid dreams which leave me feeling tired in the morning. I can cope with the side effects but not sure about taking the pills for the full 12 weeks...seems like a long time. What do other people think/what experience have others had when taking them for varying number of weeks and quiting successfully?
