Hi everyone,

I have been a 20 a day smoker for about 10 years now and have set 3 quit dates and have not hit any of them. I know i have the willpower but the universe seems to throw me a curve ball every time i get close.

If its not higher levels of stress at work, its breaking up with the girlfriend or just twisting an ankle.

I do know these appear like excuses - and i guess they could be, would just love to know how i can get started. I do feel confident that if i can get started that the hardest part for me is over.

Please help

Hi Paul, Winner is right. Waiting for the right time wont work. You have to want to do it and you have to want to do it for yourself first, then for others. No-one else can do it for you. Wanting to quit is a fantastic beginning so congratulations.

One morning I got up, had my morning fag & thought I'd try a patch for the day. See how far I could get without having a ciggie. If I could make it to the end of the day that would be fantastic. They say each smoke you don't have is doing you good so I went with that thought. I had previously been smoking 20/day for 25 years. It's now been 78 days. I stopped using patches about 2wks ago. Patches really worked for me.

Look forward to reading how you're going.

hi paul winner walker and joC have some good advise. in my experience i smoked for about 29 years and started of as a casual and then i increased over the years and in the last ten years or so i ended up smoking 25 a day and on the 9-11-11 i had a heart attack from 2 blocked arteries , i did cut down on smoking about a week before i had the attack intending to cut those deadly things out. so do yourself a favour and stop before they get you too one way or another yes it was hard for me but i can say now after 27 days it is getting a whole lot easier and im am amazed that i am suceeding anyway paul good luck and soldier on mate. regards mark.

Paul everyone is right there is never a good time .My Dad had just passed away and i have a child with huge issues and i'm under stress 24/7. I was also breathless all the time so one day i just said you know what you have a choice be on oxygen within a few years or make the effort to stop. It's the hardest thing i have ever done.

THERE WILL NEVER BE A GOOD TIME IT JUST HAS TO BE THE RIGHT TIME FOR YOU AND FOR YOU TO BELIEVE YOUR HEALTH IS WORTH SOMETHING.........

Hi Paul YES it is a very hard habit to break only a person who has never smoked will say its easy to stop, thats because they have no idea.Im on the patches and found them to be really good yeh i still get the cravings for a smoke but i just tell my self no i thought it would be really hard especially when u are having a drink with friends but you know what it never bothered me.The mind can play games with u its like having a devil on one shoulder and a angel on the other the devil telling u have a smoke and the angel saying dont.I wish u all the very best and remember we are all here to help you fight the cravings etc.
