Watching those I love die was enough for me

In 2002 I watched my mum die, the last few years on a portable oxygen bottle. She never saw her grand kids who were all born after her passing. Thanks to smoking.

In 2005 my father had a leg amputated, that wasn't too bad as he learned to walk on a prosthetic with time, his entire stay in hospital he simply talked about having cigarettes, nothing more. Even with his grand kids all around him the addiction was just too strong.

in 2011 he lost his other leg. In 2013 he had his left hand amputated. All from smoking. He is still alive but bedridden in a home where his day still revolves around his smoking.  Imagine going through all this and still wanting a cigarette.

smoking ruins families and changes our lives in many ways, I look at my story and see people who still smoke as selfish, what else could you call it? Not wanting or caring about your loved ones, only the next smoke.

Tess I am so sorry for what you have been through with your parents, my dad was the same. All I can say is - this is truly addiction. Smokers are addicts just like alcoholics or drug addicts we just don't get the same sympathy or help they get! It's sad really, we can't check into a facility that will work with us, guide and help us. We are left to our own devices - some just aren't strong enough to do it .

My grand dad smoked his entire adult life and died of lung cancer aged 70. when I was much younger I thought that was a great long life for a smoker. But really he died 20 years to young because of smoking...
