Hi everybody, We are doing some work on iCanQuit tomorrow. We don't expect that there will be too much of an impact, but if you experience any problems please try coming back a little later. In the meantime, you can get quit smoking advice and support from Quitline on 13 78 48. Thanks for your patience, The iCanQuit team.

I was just wandering why electronic cigarettes are not allowed to be sold with nicotine in Australia? I called nicorette and their quick mist spray has the same active ingredients as ecigs - propylene glycol, vegetable glycerine and food grade flavouring only they are allowed to have nicotine? Why are there two different rules? Ecigs helped me quit over 2 years ago as well as countless other people, obviously they are not dangerous or they the Quickmist spray wouldn't have the same ingredients. Shouldn't it be about helping people quit?

Hi Mandy123,

Thanks for your comment and congratulations on quitting smoking. Everybody has their own way to quit smoking and you raise some good questions. The Australian Government Department of Health controls all policy relating to the sale of tobacco related products in Australia. According to their website, unlike Nicotine Replacement Therapy (NRT) products, which have been rigorously assessed for efficacy and safety and, therefore, approved by the Therapeutic Goods Administration for use as aids in withdrawal from smoking, no assessment of electronic cigarettes has been undertaken and, therefore, the quality and safety of electronic cigarettes is not known. If you would like to find out more, you can always head to their website http://www.tga.gov.au/consumers/ecigarettes.htm or contact them at info@tga.gov.au. There is also some useful information on iCanQuit http://www.icanquit.com.au/quit-guide/methods-to-quit/alternative-methods. We hope that helps. Please do get in touch if you have any more questions.

Thanks

Thanks, I just think it's strange if the same ingredients are being used that the government is not more supportive or at least willing to look into it. Also, I was wandering what happens to all the tax made from cigarettes? I though some of it would have gone to Quitline and IcanQuit? I only ask as 3 years ago on one of my many attempts to quit I called both Quitline and Icanquit and left messages for someone to call back but never received a call from either. Sureley with all the money made from the taxes of cigarettes there would be enough funding to actually help people and call them back.

Hi Mandy123,

iCanQuit and Quitline are both funded by the Government and provide a call back service. Given it was so long ago, it is difficult to say why you didn’t get a call back, please accept our apologies for this. We understand that you have quit smoking now- Congratulations! If you ever wish to talk to Quitline again, please email us at prevention@cancerinstitute.org.au and we will arrange a call back for you.

Thanks,

The iCanQuit Team
