365 Days - a Calendar Year Tomorrow - Leap Year

Posted in Hints and tips
schedule 29 Sep 2012

One year, one whole year since I have touched a cigarette.  I never ever would have thought I could do it.  Let alone do it cold turkey.  I remember those first days feeling like each day took a year and being absolutely obsessed with thinking about not having a smoke.

I remember my first post on this site and the responses and support I got from Tiger and Jo and Meanie et al.  I remember thinking it will never get easier.  i remember the 6  week mark and almost giving in because everything was going wrong.  I remember wondering if I could ever sit in a beer garden again and be happy!

How funny it all seems now that it's a year ago.  Now, I very rarely think about having a cigarette, I find the smell quite repugnant (and I must have used to stink), I see people smoking outside builidings and think you poor things - it's got you.

A mate in week 3 said to me you will do it this  time, because you want too.  That is the key, simply you have to want to be able to beat it - you have to want to stop.  My trigger was my dad's heart attack and looking at him laying there in intensive care I thoughht is that what you want for your future?  The answer was a resounding no and so I stopped.  Find a trigger and use that as your motivation that is my only advice.

To everyone that helped me on this site I say a massive THANK YOU!  There are a special few who I could not have done it with out, Tiger and Meanie you rock and we bloody did it!

Good luck to everyone, you can do it and as cliched as it sounds it does get easier.

A year - I think I am quietly proud of myself.

A great story. 365 days is impressive.

One thing you said is spot on "you have to want to stop"

That is the big thing. I wish I could put that in bold text.

me, still got about 3 months to go before I can brag about one year, but I will do it - because I WANT to.

Congratulations and i agree you have to want to stop.

I am at 120 days smoke free and it has not been easy but i have done most of the hard yards now and will never go back. This is my first time quitting and my last after 40 years of smoking as I don't think i could go through all this again.

For all you who have just started on the quit trip hang in there it does get easier.
