I want to quit smoking. As of today 23/08/22 I am still a heavy smoker. I quit alcohol and drugs 649 days ago and I once thought that would be impossible for me. My life in sobriety is better than I ever imagined it would be. I want to continue to improve my quality of life and the next right thing for me to do to achieve this is for me to quit smoking. I just don’t know how to start right now.

Congratulations on wanting and tending to your new life style. You know you can do what you put your mind to. Embrace this new phase in your life just as you did the others. You will love the freedom and reap so many rewards along the way and in the years to follow.

As Robyn says you need to set a date. Meanwhile, read our stories and commit yourself to this journey. We have succeed after more than 40 years of heavy smoking, and anyone can do the same. Learn the mindset, of making this a choice and not fearing it. You can do this, and if you don't at first succeed, try, try again. Remember that you really only need to quit once!

Find joy in your decision despite any set backs. I quit easily and had an easier time than most it seems. You may have your trials and tribulations, but keep with it and you will find your freedom from smoking too. Stay positive, be proud and just KNOW that you CAN do this.

Thank you very much Robyn, Happiness and Gah. Your kind and motivational comments mean a lot to me. I want to be a non-smoker by 01/01/23. I don’t mean I will quit on 31/12, it must be well before then. The reason is on 01/01/23 I have booked my first ever overseas holiday and I don’t want to be craving a smoke for the 20+ hours of flight time. When I visit my extended family in UK who haven’t seen me since I was 5 I don’t want to be stinking of smoke and leaving cigarette butts in their yard, outside their front door etc. Travel is one thing I missed out on while spending my adult life focused on addiction, alcoholism and heavy smoking. I also want the day to come where my elderly mother suddenly realises I have quit. Back to today: I have spoken to an addiction specialist GP and have obtained some NRT products. I haven’t picked my quit date just yet, that will be next.
