Day 27 and feeling terrible physically and mentally

Posted in Getting started
schedule 4 May 2020

Hello everyone I decided to quit 27 days ago after a news article about covid 19 and smoking literally scared me to the max.

I am 27 and smoked for around 9 years (stopped twice when I was pregnant) and then started again when the children were a few months old. I smoked around 5-10 a day.

I'm on day 27 and had it all, dizziness for a couple of days to start with, insomnia, sore throat, sinus/ear pressure, terrible chest tightness and burning, acid reflux, dodgy stomach, heart palpitations, mouth ulcers, sore tongue and stinging mouth, coughing up grey streaky phglem.

My chest tightness went about a week ago and has now come back.

But since the all the covid 19 stuff I have been in a terrible mental state with panic attacks and anxiety through the roof, decided to quit at the worst time ever!

I have had to call the doctor and get some antidepressants (Citalopram) which I started today.

Anyway one of the main reasons I've been in such a state is because of physically feeling awful. I had to call paramedics on Monday because I thought I was having a heart attack from the chest tightness and burning but all tests came back fine. They checked ECG, blood sugar, blood pressure, sp02 and listening to chest which should of reassured me but the physical pain was still there badly.

Then took myself up the hospital yesterday due to feeling like I couldn't do this anymore, I couldn't suffer another day/night of this chest pain and mental distress. All tests came back fine, had ECG, blood tests, urine test, chest x-ray, blood pressure, sp02.

I have acid reflux medicine and anti depressants now to see if this helps.

I can't see how heartburn/reflux/indigestion would hurt this bad! It's constant near enough and gets worse as the day gets on.

I'm starting to wonder if it's a mental thing from the terrible anxiety and panic attacks or terrible muscle tension that builds up as the day goes on.

The chest pain feels like a cold burning pain (a bit like when you first chew strong gum and get that cold feeling in your mouth) and spreads to my back. Usually starts on left side but sometimes spreads to right side of chest and round to back on both sides too.

Wonder if anybody else has had anything similar or is this pointing more to an anxiety related issue than stopping smoking?

I've been convinced every single day that I have felt crap that I have Covid 19 which has also made me a nervous wreck.

Please help I can't see light at the end of the tunnel and I keep thinking would I of just been better off carrying on smoking 😪

Congratulations LoobiePie, you have done this (escape from nicotine).

Definitely, you would not be better off smoking - that would be another problem to deal with.

What is a withdrawal symptom / pang (whatever you want to call it)? It is only a slight insecure feeling about half an hour after putting out your last cigarette, which causes you to want to light up another. Pnce you quit, they start to go away.

The Covid 19 epidemic bad news is all around us all of the time, so it's not surprising that so many are panicing, but we are getting through this safely.

Focus on the positives on your escape - there must be many reasons for quitting, and many symptoms of recovery.

Welcome Loobypie, it sounds very much like anxiety to me with the body, trying to work out this new situation. Since you have had all tests done, and you are being treated by Medical staff, you need to start taking on one thing at a time to stop the panic. Eg Diet, you could perhaps eat more healthy than before, because you have the money saved to do this. Make a list of the problems that worry you too, and read learn and touch base with us here, for any clarity you might need.

I had heart palpitations, these would come and go and my stomach played up quite a bit, so you are not alone in these physical feelings in your body.

We are all different so some people would not experience what you are feeling.

This could be the best time to stop smoking, because you have limited distractions. So rather than panicking about the world we live in concentrate on what you need to do at this time, we can all improve on our eating habits, and we can all learn to meditate at this time.

You need to try daily on a routine that keeps you happy and motivated, this will help you in your life, when the Covid19 restrictions are lifted.

Ditto to all of the above. Try to take steps to alleviate and control . The mind is a powerful thing. Make it work for you. You want to quit and reap all the benefits it will give you in the future . Quitting smoking is something we will never regret doing.

ditto, too.

i'm high anxiety sometimes, highly strung temperament/personality/cognitive behaviours often negative and yet i have Quit.

i dont regret quitting, and will not use my vulnerabilities for an excuse to light up ever again.
