Hi everyone .. after 30 years of smoking and the merry go round of half hearted quit attempts, I’m back for another go. What’s different this time is that I have consciously built my support networ and been more transparent about quitting and the reasons why. My main reasons are health and money. I want to breathe easier and experience the rush of a truly deep inhale, I want to wake up without the smokers cough and I want to stop smelling like a two day old ashtray. Most of all though, I want the the knock on effects of good health and in particular more time with my loved ones, more energy for when and if I ever get grandchildren. I no longer want to be imprisoned by a lifetime smoking habit.

Money .. there’s so much I could do with the $180 (sometimes more) “up in smoke” budget. Though I do have to admit that the pain of knowing how much I have spent has been a good motivator in this first quit week. I’m a visual person and it helps me to see the actual cash build up. I also have a notebook with ideas on how I plan to reward myself. Uodating my kitchen with new appliances in 8 months is completely doable given the size of “up in smoke” budget and so is buying a decent second hand truck in a year and a half. It’s annoying to think about the past and money spent etc.. but it’s also a huge motivator for this new path I find myself on.

I hope I make it this time. I’m one week into my quit program. I’ve opted for the NRT gum and have my adult children enlisted as the cheer squad. To also increase my success this time (hopefully) I have joined this online community. Reading about other people’s experiences is deeply motivating for me and I feel that I need all the help that I can get. Thank you

Your not expecting much are you Nowra6? Good news is, that you have come to the right place and that they are all very real expectations. It has been proven that the success rate is much higher with counseling (a site like this) as opposed to an NRT. Learning about nicotine and you, how it controls you and sucks you into a relentless circle of cravings by its nature, will you see how evil and utterly worthless it is.

Anyone can quit smoking. Think positive and achieve your goals. Many have.

Hi Nowra6.

Health & wealth are very important reasons to Quit arn't they!

You've stepped off the merry-go-round and be careful for a few more weeks, particularly when you are reducing the NRT gum.

Good on you, Nowra6, and congrats everyone. This is my first day without them. Had my first Champix this morning. So far so good. No cravings. I do find though that every now and again, I’ll go to have a cigarette, and then realise I’ve quit. For me right now, It’s all about changing that automatic thinking.
