Can i do it ....

I'm a 31 year old female from England living in Aus. I like to think i'm not addicted to smoking but more that I enjoy it when drinking. I also like to think that I don't drink heaps or to the point that it's a problem however when I do have a glass of wine or two (or 5) I always smoke whilst drinking. Especially if i'm outside on a night out in a smoking area with friends who smoke I can often have one every 20 mins or so. I don't wake up wanting a cigarette and I can go all day at work and it not even cross my mind, but out of habit as soon as i get home i'll go for a smoke. I then won't be too bothered about smoking much more unless I have a few glasses of wine with my partner in the evening which we often do. He smokes as does our house mate so it's also a social thing but more a habit. I want to quit drinking too as this often leads to other things and smoking is one of them and i don't want to be like that anymore -it's not attractive, it smells, it's bad for you, it's expensive etc etc.... but i'm scared I wont be able to do it and i'l fail. Why are most of things we enjoy in life bad for us ... very annoying.
It's my birthday this weekend and to be honest all I want is will power to do the things I say i'm not going to do ... but each week it's the same thing. Feeling hopeless.

I found my worst temptation was when i was drinking alcohol, I've tried to quit several times, I hope this is my final quit attempt! Good Luck!

I have a similar story having also loved the drinking and smoking connection, and usually in a bingeing situation. On the flip side, throughout my life I've also held a keen interest in nutrition, yoga and staying healthy. With various attempts to stop smoking I've found it too difficult to separate the drinking/smoking nexus, so I tend to stop drinking when I quit cigarettes. I can recommend Champix which does have associated side affects, but is an incredibly supportive medication which allows me to fully give up without any withdrawal symptoms. If you read the threads on Champix you'll find many people suffer nausea. This can be avoided if you take the tablet with meals. Best mid meal so that you already have something in your stomach. The other symptom I experience are vivid dreams, mostly quite negative dreams at that, but in my opinion it's worth putting up with minor side affects in the short term to escape the clutches of nicotine. If you leave both alcohol and cigarettes at the same time, I find it useful to indulge myself in nutritious food and exercise, so you really feel the benefit of a much healthier body. I've made a few attempts over the years to get the monkey off my back, but it's absolutely without question one of the most important decisions you will make. It's your birthday this weekend? Mine too :) For a minute just imagine yourself at 70 with a grey complexion, poor circulation, possibly emphysema and goodness knows what other health issues. I know a woman who'd smoked for years who had a stroke in her early 60s... not a pleasant experience. It's your life, and your choice. Wishing you a very happy birthday and the best of luck.

I’m now that old lady. I just smoked when out with couples. I didn’t drink a lot, but it was cool back then. I even quit my first pregnancy. Well now as I say I’m a two pack smoker with numerous health issues and three grown children that followed mom’s footsteps and have heath issues quit now before it’s so hard, your sick or you watch your children follow your footste. Time I am telling you goes fast, today becomes yester/year.
