I have not smoked for 20 days. I first tried a cigerette at the age of 11. By the age of 13 I was probably have one a few times a week.

This moved on to smoking 2 -3 a day throughout high school. Uni it just became full time. So 11 to now is 39 years. Thats a long time, my whole adult life. Ive just basically had enough. Theres nothing really good about them. I decided to try Champix, my doctor is supportive. Its a 12 week course. You continue smoking and on the second week you have a quit day (I gave up on day 10) . I planned to quit on day 11 but on day 10 I just didnt feel like smoking. The medication is in my understanding, suppose to work on your neurotransmiiters and block the craving for nicotin. Basically I do still think of it but I rearly feel like having one when I do think of it. My reasoning is If I smoke a cigerette now, I know it will taste terrible and it will just make me want more. Thats the only thing it will do for me, is make me want more. So why bother. Im hoping the longer I dont smoke the less I will think of it. Its just habits that trigger me thinking of it now. Ill try to form some better habits. Im just hoping it remains this way and it gets better. Is anyone else here on Champix.

Hi Jencat I am also on Champix, I don’t think I would have got this far without it. After 3 days I stopped smoking as they tasted terrible. I found 1 mg was to much after a week now only taking .5 mg morning and night and feel so much better. I have had a slip up and was so sick for days, I never want to smoke again. I don’t even have cravings now.. I am 1 month 2days minus 1 day for slip up.. 😁

You doing great 👍👍👍

Ok I have been lucky. I havent had any side effects really. They say one of the side effects are vivid dreams. I was half hoping I would get them . My sleeping is probably a little less but im not a great sleeper anyway. One month is great. Well Done. Dont worry about the slip up at least you didnt continue smoking. I feel I would have to start again if I slip up so determine not to.

Hi there

Well done both of you.

I have a similar story and am only a couple years older. I am doing Champix at day 32. I stopped taking the night table 3 weeks ago as i was feeling excessively tired and a bit vague. After feeling pretty good again 2-3 weeks I find myself this past couple days extremely tired again. Just curious if have felt tired I am wondering if it’s nicotine withdrawals or Champix. Normally I am on the side of insomniac. Also interestingly I’ve barely told anyone I have gave up. And I’m not sure why Thank you

Hi Stugglestreet

Well done on the 32 days. I do get tired but I feel I'm not sleeping well at night therefore im tired. Its kind of hard to tell if it is Champix or nicotine withdrawal or just unrelated. I think when you tell people then it makes you feel commited to it or you have not told them because it puts pressure on you to stay quit. Thats fine. After all this time smoking its hard to believe I have stopped. You will tell people when you are ready or you believe it is for good. Good luck with it.

Hi,

I am on Champix as well. Day 42 today. I have found it relatively easy but I am going on holiday and I am worried that I will want to smoke. I am telling myself that I could just smoke on holiday and not when I get back. I wish I wasn't even considering it. But I am.

Hi Hobnob

Well done on the 42 days.

With the holiday maybe just think of something else when you consider smoking on your holiday and just leave it open when you are there. You may feel differently by then.

A few things to consider though if you do smoke.

1. If you have one it wont stop the urge to smoke more. It will just make the urge stronger

2. You will have to start again when you return or continue to smoke.

3. Champix is only available on the PBS for one course plus another 12 weeks if you wish to do an extra 12 weeks. After that you have to pay full price. I think it is expensive.

Put out of your mind till you get there..you will still enjoy your holiday if you dont smoke maybe even more.

I just started champix 2nd time around. 1st time was a few years ago when it was not subsidized and very expensive. I too am going on holidays for a family event next month and have to travel by planes & vehicle for hours as well as hang around airports in between so thought best give up now. Something my family have always harped at me about so being with them will help me hopefully.

Hi jacq

Its not easy. Suppose you just have to keep yourself busy while in transit. The habit is hard to give up. Keep it up. We miss it because of the addiction but there is nothing good about it. If you slip up doesnt matter just keep trying. You can do it this time.

Hi Jencat,

Thank you for that, it helps. I am going to see what happens as you say but remember what is at stake. Thanks again.

I have to agree with Jencat hobnob. Is anything worth getting hooked again? You have come so far. Do you really believe that you will have more fun on a vacation with a cigarette between your fingers? The only thing i can suggest is to read Allan Carr's book and stop smoking permanently and with no cravings so you can enjoy your vacation. I did it cold turkey in two weeks without the book, but am reading it to reinforce and get rid of cravings i could have for good. I hope you will make the right decision. Take this advice from a Happy Non-Smoker.

Hi Jencat. I hope your journey was a successful one, that finds you a very happy non-smoker. I have posted "Have you given up given up?Try this" in hope some who have quit trying may give it another try. As you have experience with Champix, i would love to hear your opinion about my backwards smart quit.

Looking forward to hearing your comments. Thanks!
