Getting started

Hello Ive been thinking about quitting for about a week now. Ive reduced how much i smoke. Started to cut out some of the smokes i have in certain situations for example not smoking in the car. Is there anyone that has used the cut down method that can share some tips. Or share if this method has been successful for them Thankyou.

Hi Christine. Glad to hear you are at a point where you want to quit. It can be good to cut down and start talking yourself out of smoking but in my opinion this doesn't usually lead anyone down the quitting path. If anything it may add to the torment of giving up because you're body will always be begging you for the next smoke instead of letting it go all together. Using an aide to help quit can be great, patches, prescriptions from a doctor and using a forum like this for support or to post when you are craving is great. It's helped me put things in perspective. I hope you do well and take that next step. You'll probably never feel ready for it, not many of us ever are but when you do you will be so proud of yourself and feel stronger for it.

Thankyou Tara yes cutting down can be torturous at times allways thinking about the next smoke.

Hi Christine,
I totally agree with everything Tara has said. Until you actually stop you will not be on the path to quitting. Instead you will be wondering how soon you can light up again as quitting just does not work that way. I got down to 1 one morning and then panicked and simply had a few more as I stopped hyperventilating about the thought of having no more cigarettes. Cold turkey and over 430 days smoke free, I just wish it was as "simple" for everyone else as for me. Note, I did not say, "easy".

think we all have our own way we get to the point of surrender in other words I quit and is we have to stop fighting hence the word quit.
how ever we get there is up to us no one can tell me an addict how to quit you know what the answer is :)_\
so while I may disagree to some degree with others on this subject I do agree that not smoking is the only way to not smoke how we get there or how much of a fight we put up is up to us again quit means there must have been a fight or struggle for there to be a quit.

Thanks for the thoughts. I think having been a heavy smoker and not being willing to stop tell now cutting down seemed like a starting point

Hi Christine. If I can do it, so can you. Do post again and let us know what is happening. If you err, trust me, there will be quitters who will egg you on and try to spur you on to success. If you need to blow your own horn, others on this site will recognize your effort to succeed and will either gain motivation to continue or recognize your determination. This is one huge, powerful site for quitters.
