Preparing to quit

Posted in Getting started
schedule 16 May 2016

Was going through my emails and received an email from icanquit. I started reading the success stories which have been inspirational. I have been smoking for over 30 years and am turning 47 years old in about 3 weeks. I want to give myself a birthday present by quitting by my birthday. I am putting preparations in to gear for it is time to take control of my health. Please support me in this journey. I admire the people here that have taken control of there well being and discovered that being a non smoker has a lot of advantages. I know its not going to be a bed of roses but then again I would love to smell how sweet those roses would be after quitting. I have tried several times to quit but sometimes some of us have to fail to achieve success. Give me encouragement and hope in knowing there is a road of success and a life free of cigarettes. Thank you.

Serena713 . Just do it. You can do it, really. I'm a real heavy smoker and just turned 50 and have smoked most of my life. Now I have over 75 days behind me one day at a time! I recommend just completely quit cold turkey and white knuckle it for a few days. After the nicotine gets out of your system stay around and blog about your feelings and learn about the mental addiction which is the more powerful enemy.

Please post again!

the road to quit has been a rocky one for me I had several goes at it, and the only thing I learnt from those efforts was if I had a little back door in my mind a get out clause I would and did smoke again.

it wasn't until I was 100% going to go through what ever it took to be smoke free.

I don't think we are ever out of the woods but it seems to get easier as time mounts up sort of makes me think twice about having a smoke and blowing all that hard work effort, blood sweat and tears, and then the guilt and shame after having the smoke, its a price I am not willing to pay.

nothing but 100% commitment will work any lurking notion that I can have a smoke will mean I will have one, so its not easy but I am pretty sure its worth it.

really what are we giving up?? sucking poison in to our lungs , no brainer right, who really wants to suck poison in to their lungs??

truth helps.

You are right to prepare; that is super important. I am the same age with the same smoking history. I'm on day nine and feel like I will certainly succeed this time.

Be nice to yourself; plenty of water, relaxation and sleep.

Realise that cravings pass.

Prepare to have a tough week or two - the rewards are more than worth it.

Good luck!

So good to hear you are doing it! The road is very tough. Just stay on the road to no smokes again. Take it one hour/ one day at a time. You can do this!
