My fiancé and I set a quit date. We live in a small town of 200 people. I don't work. I have slipped and smoked 4 cigs in 3 days. Was a pack a day smoker for 30 years. I think it's boredom and it's like I'm giving up my best friend. I hope someone out there can give me some insight how to quit for good! Thanks...

Sometimes we have to look at our so called "friends" and actually cull some of them. I don't know if your friend is called Benson, Marlborough, Dunhill, Stradbroke, Craven or what. Flick that friend. Some friends are leeches... Life is too short. Don't succumb to rent a crowd as they are seldom sincere or caring friends. Take some time and air your story on this site to let others know how you are feeling. You will be amazed at the understanding and support. Meanwhile, divorce your friend...

Hi Shady02, I think the answer is in your post, your bored! What can you do in place of smoking? What's something that smoking stopped you from doing? Can you go for a swim? It's hard to smoke with wet hands 😀 What about starting a new hobby, course of study, whatever interests you. You have done something amazing just by setting that date and giving it a go. Use this opportunity to create something awesome. Remember you are a non smoker now, start living as one. FYI I'm 500 ish days quit after 28yrs so it is possible. Mel.

Thanks everyone for the encouragement! But help!!! We have no swimming pool, no stores. I just moved to this small town from a big city. I think that is part of my problem, no friends, and I just sit. I am disabled (my foot and hand). My fiancé is doing pretty good. Doesn't smoke at work, but still comes home and smokes a couple. After quitting, I opened the freezer and found some cigs. So I started back up. I was thinking this morning (while smoking a cigarette) that if they aren't in the house I'm not going to the little store we do have just to buy some. Maybe I can stop then. Any more suggestions???? I need all the help and support I can get...

Just remember your best friend is really trying to kill you! I am just beginning a QUIT, I went through magazines and made a poster , posted it on the wall, to help me on my journey. I have had great success in the past doing this with weight loss. I have 6 things to do when I have a craving 1) Go for a walk 2) Work on a craft ( mine is hooking a rug) 3) Mediate, Breath 4) Just remember a crave passed in just a few moments 5) Log in to this site to support others and get support 6) PRAY!! I like the idea of the adult coloring books.

As the others say- you really don't needs friends like cigarettes. They are expensive and abusive. I took up knitting slippers. When I started to get twitchy I would knit or clean out a cupboard, pull some weeds or walk for 5 minutes. Every craving you beat is a win for you. Reading this page is always excellent too. Good luck and stay strong.

Getting rid of all the things which remind you of smoking is a good idea. I threw out ash-trays, lighters and the last packet of cigarettes. One thing I love is podcasts - you can download so many good ones (try ABC Local Radio eg Richard Fidler and also Radio National to start with). All you need is a phone and a signal and you can download a heap and then listen to them when you are bored.

Good luck.

I met a new friend a couple weeks ago. Imagine meeting someone in a town of 200 people. She smokes. She was so considerate that she actually went outside her own home to smoke. I'm on the patch, can anyone tell me if it makes you kinda dizzy and nausea? I smoked almost a pack a day so that's what the quit line sent me. I'm really having a hard time, being nausea and jittery. I feel like I lost my best friend. I don't know how to knit or crochet, can someone give me other ideas where I don't have to use my hands too much as my right hand is disabled and doesn't work really well? Thanks everyone for the encouragement!

Hi Shasha: where do you find the adult coloring books? I live in a very small town (no stores)? Do you know if I can download pictures and print them off and where to look on the Internet? That's a really great idea!
