Hi everyone my name is Karen and I am on day 6. Today has been my toughest day so far, as pathetic as this might sound I miss smoking, I don't however miss the cough, stained fingers, and spending money on smoking. Do you ever stop missing it?

schedule 10 Sep 2015

Day 6 is fantastic - my first real downer was Day 4 and then Day 14 but it gets better and easier. I don't know if there is any rule for whether or not you miss it. I spoke to a colleague who gave up five years ago and he said he never misses it and that after the first six months you start to forget. I spoke to another friend who said he misses it after ten years. I am still missing it but when that happens I go for a walk or log on here or keep myself busy. I am only on Day 18 so I should not, perhaps, be giving advice but I absolutely know, from everyone I talk to, that it does get easier. I think it really is about taking one day at a time. Keep up the good work and treat yourself with the money you have saved.

Hi Kaz. I miss it tremendously if I have a drink with other smokers. I'm not surrounding myself with that environment at the moment though & so I'm not missing it at all. My problem is that the instant I get stressed or overwhelmed I want to reach for a drink and of course a cigarette goes with it. You have to retrain your brain as I've discovered the smoke is really not necessary. I have over the past 5 months happily had a number of drinks with non smoker friends - no worries, it's being around the smokers in a social situation that's a problem for me. Day 5 then day 7 for me wasn't good then day 14 was horrendous, day 21 I couldn't even make myself want one. Every day is different for everyone, just gotta push through and stick with the site and take all the advice you can get. Drink lots of water, walk & stay busy! It's so incredibly worth it, 6 days is a great achievement - don't stop now - you can do it.

Hi Bronte, 5 months for you is fantastic, well done. Being with people that smoke is not really a problem as I am the only one in my social group that smoked. I think its more of a psychological thing for mr and I have to change my thinking. Its now or never for me so failure is not an option....lol. Thank you for your support

Hope you got through the day ok. Yes, it's coming up to 5 months on the 19 of Sept, however you should know, it's not been 5 months straight. Unfortunately I did fall off the wagon for a bit in between. I started on the 19 of April then messed up for just a couple of weekends in July & then more stress caused August to be kind of all over the place. I've calculated from all the ticks & crosses on my calendar, I've been smoke free 100 days. I'm so glad I'm back on track & didn't let it go any longer!

Hi Kaz, I'm a Karen too! I've only been off them for a month after smoking for 37 years never giving up before and really miss them! Because I was so young when I started they were my lifeline when things got tough or when I was happy! I was feeling really depressed and lonely a week ago but that feeling is slowly passing now! I was told you can go through like a grieving process, which is exactly how I felt. Others on this site said the same. My hubby is also still smoking and it was a time for us to have a smoke, drink or a coffee and chat. I've read other posts and they say that you do miss the smokes for awhile but it gets easier and that feeling passes! Good luck on your journey and remember the feelings just get better!

Hey Kazzy, that is a tough one when your partner smokes too and it was your chat time. It's definately a grieving process, your not alone with that one but your right it does pass! thank goodness, well done, 1 month many more to go.

Hi Karen and Bronte, its exactly like a grieving process. Today is still tough but I just keep thinking that if I gave in now I would have to start all over again, and I would be dissappointed in myself. Karen its amazing that you are giving up while your hubby is smoking, you are really strong!!! Well done on your achievements girls and I know together we can do it.
