Getting started on my journey...

schedule 8 Apr 2015

Today I completed week one on Champix and I noticed some real change in my smoking behaviour this morning. Normally, I'm lighting a cigarette whilst still in bed, immediately upon waking, before my eyelids are even open. This morning was really different. I woke up at 6am with breathing difficulties, reached for my puffer INSTEAD of a cigarette, then made a pot of tea so I could take my Champix tablet. This might not sound huge to anyone else but I haven't made a pot of tea without having a cigarette for over 5 years. I took my pot of tea back to bed, then decided to have a cigarette. It didn't satisfy me at all, so of course I had a second one to see if that would do the trick. Nothing but disappointment.

PS: Typing without smoking is HARD!

Keep it up!!! Im on day 48 with champix. Im one of the lucky ones who hasnt had a side effect from champix. I have a few weeks to go on it left. The way i see it is, put up with the side effects for a short amount of time or, live with lung cancer. :) keep going strong

I already have copd disease. my lungs are starting to give up, When I am going to sleep, I have a lot of wheezing. And when I walk it is sooooo hard. This could be my last chance before it is too late. I have made the decision that this packet I just bought, must last me 2 weeks, that is only 3 cigarettes a day. I must get on top of this, or suffer the consequences. need some help out there?

Hey Trish57 - I did have headaches for the first week on Champix, but these have completely gone. The nausea has also completely gone after the first week. I still have some insomnia but I'm managing it much better with deep breathing & relaxation exercises.

For me, the side-effects of Champix are nothing compared to the effects of smoking. So a little bit of headache & nausea in the first week didn't put me off. I always take my Champix with a full pot of tea and this really does lessen the side effects. I guess you have to weigh the pros and cons of any treatment. But if I had to make the choice between COPD & headache - I would choose the headache every time.

Do you have a good GP? Maybe you could review your treatment options with your GP?

Hey Graham87 - so good to hear you are having such a positive experience with Champix!!! That's brilliant!!! I'm in my second week now and feeling terrific. Feeling much more hopeful and positive about the future. I hold a very similar view to you, that the temporary side effects of Champix are well worth it, compared to the horror of lung cancer.

Wishing you the very best - thanks for sharing your journey with me :)
